I am all for new experiences, but our RESTAURANT meal at the Trout, was never to be repeated. As a birthday treat, our table was booked for 6, at 6.10 I went and asked if we could go through to the dining room . Drinks and food orders taken, the starters arrived, lovely description , but very poor effort on the plate, expecting a terraine we received shredded ham in a butter mould, with branston pickle instead of Westmorland sauce. The main course we all 4 had different and my beef was uneatable , tough and grizzly . ( a daube of beef) the sauce and vegetables were very nice , I mentioned the meat problem to the waitress . Dessert we waited 30 for a menu then had to find someone to ask to take our order. Baked Alaska arrived later and the meringue was sickly sweet and the sponge hard. The service was non existent , 3 very pleasant young people trying to do a job they weren’t trained for As bar food and staff it would have possible passed, as a restaurant it failed gloriously. The mirrors in the dining room doors are going rusty, doors which halve the glorious dining room it used to be when it WAS a 4 star hotel and restaurant , food and service . And sadly removing the table cloths has not enhanced the cold dismal dining room at all. The rest of the ground floor is beautifully decorated, it’s like they want to forget about the restaurant . We paid in full, that was a task, reception sent us to the bar and nobody there we had to wait. No mention of unbeatable food , as there was no sign of anyone in charge of anything . Sad to see what it once was as a hotel where it was the place to be .

Been here loads of times and always enjoyed our food never had a bad thing to say about this hotel? Up until now went for Father’s Day the staff are very pleasant on arrival, but after that it all went downhill, the starters were nice I suppose you can’t go wrong with soup, we decided we would have Sunday lunch so I ordered two chicken Sunday lunches, They came to the table stone cold!,,, and the Yorkshire pudding looked like it had been through coal mine it was that black, after sending it back and then having to reheat it and bring it back,,, when we started to eat it I’ve never tasted anything so awful in all my life I don’t know what the gravy was but it was deafly not beef gravy it was absolutely disgusting the carrots were frozen and horrible the potato was about the only thing that I could say was nice, the chicken was obviously cheap and nasty, The vegetables were absolutely tasteless, we were booked here for Christmas dinner we have now cancelled,, lost the full family due to this we did complain to the head waiter but he was patronising towards my wife by saying we had lost our appetite we are 54 years old don’t need somebody to tell me if I’ve lost my appetite,, which I hadn’t,,, and the staff need trained in customer, not even an apology obviously their loss,, refused to pay the bill, So we only paid for the starters and the drinks certainly won’t be going back here again, and I’ll make sure everybody knows how bad it is don’t waste your money the only good point is, the place is a lovely looking hotel but obviously got an absolute one star chef, The chef must’ve left because the food used to be consistent and nice,, the chef doesn’t know how to cook overall very very disappointed after many years of going here and we are local people obviously in the wrong hands, this is what happens when you let staff run your business and not you being there to hold the fort looking at the reviews we should’ve looked before we went but as we’ve been here so many times and never ever felt we had to look so choose wisely and don’t choose the hotel Cockermouth.

Lovely hotel, the room was clean, spacious and had everything we needed. Breakfast was made to order, which was nice. Service was fine, could have done with a little more information from the person on the front desk. We'd stay again if we're in the area.

We weren’t residents, but went for dinner as a family on Saturday evening. Starters were ok, but mains were terrible - risotto rice on the fish was inedible. Service was good - we left a tip for that. We did tell them re: the food quality on the main, but given the service, we were happy to pay full price but will not be returning. Really disappointed - and also wondered why the Christmas decorations were still up?

Stayed 2 nights in a junior suite river view on the ground floor. Don’t like stairs and no lift. Nice view of the Derwent flowing past. Excellent room. Nice big bed and large bathroom with bath, walk-in shower, heated towel rail and underfloor heating. We had a big fridge but water is extra! Coffee/tea making facilities fine. Large and quick kettle but no teapot and rather small cups. The only con was the APPALLINGLY BAD WIFI. There’s an excellent signal in the main body of the hotel but not in our room! Fortunately there’s a good 5G signal. Breakfasts excellent, with the usual hot and cold options and served by two very pleasant ladies. We ate in the dining room in the evening. Nice food but hardly any other diners. There’s a different menu in the bar and most guests had opted for that. We did have lunch in the very busy bar on the second day, which was very enjoyable. Very pleasant staff in all departments. Unfortunately we were overcharged by £50 when paying our bill-two items which we most definitely hadn’t consumed! The receptionist recognised this very quickly and refunded our £50 straight away. Would we go again? Very possibly but we’d have our evening meals in the bar rather than the almost deserted dining room. A pity, as the dining room menu is very palatable.

We booked a night here last minute. The hotel is situated in Cockermouth which has a small high street, there’s not much there so if you’re looking for peace and relaxation this is the spot for you. There’s a large car park and as you enter, you’ll see the lake where you can sit and have a drink/lunch outside. The hotel is spotless and beautifully decorated, modern but, homely. The staff were very friendly and efficient. Our room was 303, lots of stairs which was fine for us but, older people might struggle. It was private, clean and the bed was really comfy, I had a great nights sleep. I loved the beams and the older style windows. There was tea, coffee, biscuits, hair dryer, toiletries, plenty of toilet roll, everything you could need in the room. Bathroom was clean and the bath was lovely. Had a few problems with the water pressure, the cold tap for the sink goes on and off and the lower shower could spray out hot water unexpectedly which gave me a bit of a shock! But other than that it was perfect. We did say we would probably go for one of the bigger rooms next time but that’s just our preference. The evening meal was delicious, the chefs are very talented, we had lunch, dinner and breakfast and enjoyed all of it. The service was excellent too, very attentive and accommodating. You could see how hard the staff work to accommodate the guests preferences, needs etc… the head waiter was great, unfortunately I didn’t catch his name but he had everything running smoothly and nothing was too much trouble. Slept really well it was very quiet through the night. Breakfast was a cold buffet and the.n table service for the cooked option which was delicious. Check out was smooth. Loved our stay and would absolutely recommend visit this hotel.

An incredible overnight stay with someone very special. Staff customer service second to none especially the 2 ladies on the breakfast service who went above and beyond with providing the best experience. Especially as they had a wedding to follow a busy breakfast service

We went for Sunday lunch which was excellent. One of the party was partially deaf with hearing aids and wanted to say how much the absence of background music was appreciated as it meant that she could enjoy and join in withconversation. Thank you for providing such sa helpful atmosphere.

We only came for food but was not impressed by the attitude of the staff, we felt like we was intruding on there day, we went for the turkey dinner and the food was avarage. I don't think it was acceptable for staff to tut and complain when we ask for a table and then for the dirty table to wiped over as, we even heard one staff member when walking away from another table "I've only got one pair of hands haven't I" we spoke with the Manager who was brilliant and he did say they all had a team meeting this morning and he apologises, I hope they can turn it around as we was here a year and half ago and it couldn't be faulted.
