After all the rain in the UK we decided to go to somewhere dry! We settled on Alicante and looked around hotels in the area that were in a good location for the marina, restaurants, beach and travel links and decided the Gran Sol by Melia fit the criteria. Getting there from the airport was easy and quick, we walked outside and got the C6 bus immediately as they run every 20 mins and were at the marina (Parc de Mar) stop in around 30 mins. There are two melia in the area, its not the one on the marina, the gran sol sits a street behind, look for the tallest building and you will see the name on it. Its a 5-10 minute,easy walk. Reception where really helpful and were checked in without fuss and straight to our room on the 20th floor, we uplifted to a sea view for not a lot. The room was clean and tidy, had a sitting area, hair dryer, kettle and coffee and tea, lots of storage, fridge (packed with items for sale). Beds were big, really warm and comfortable. No noise after everyone in around 11pm. We tried the roof top bar on floor 26, great views of the city and castle, nice bar and restaurant and you can walk out on to a narrow walk way for photos... if you dare! Breakfast was a buffet style with usual bacon, sausage, eggs, various toast and buns as well as yogurt and fruit options and lighter bites. It changed a little each day with local items on the buffet too. Coffee was really nice. The hotel is 10 mins walk from the Metro to Benidorm (line 1) and 15 minutes to the train to places like Elche (Elx). Right next to the main promenade and the marina with lots of shops and bars, tapas and restaurants within 5 minutes in the old town back streets. Reasonably priced meals, a pint of San Miquel from EUR 2.50 Wine EUR 2.00 at 100 Montaditos. Most please EUR 3.50 for either. Austins sport bar is good if your into the rugby and football! The beach is under 10 mins walk and really nice with some restaurants on it at places. Most days had some cloud, one day was clear and around 24 C so caught some rays! We found the hotel was great for location, clean and tidy with no issues with the room. You could get really picky and say the bottom of the bathroom door could have had a touch of varnish to refresh it but just about every hotel we stay in you could find those small issues! After reading some not so good reviews we I must say we really enjoyed our stay and did not have any negative comments.
