It’s not just the ever ending supply of fluffy white towels or the bottomless glass of freshly squeezed orange juice at breakfast that defines this Hotel, it’s more than that, it’s the 101% commitment to service and your absolute happiness. The housekeeper who noticed my dirty reading glasses and left a cleaning cloth and the concierge who got my car for me before I’d even got to the front of the hotel, then when he knew we were sea swimming rushed to get us towels and water without invitation. This hotel is beautiful and it takes a while to discover all its beauty. The quiet adults pool had drinks delivered at the press of a little button, the indoor pool with its wonderful Spa, no Hotel is complete of course without its own donkeys and art displays and it’s grounds are well stocked with floral delights. Service seems to be entwined in the foundations of this Hotel from Thomas downwards everyone without exception seems absolutely focused on exceeding service expectations, and they deliver. The restaurants are truly full of high class dining delicacies the chefs are skilled and the ingredients are perfect but my dilemma is that it would be a crime not to award 5 stars here, but wait for it- I didn’t like the menu! I totally accept that others would consider me mad and they may be right but let me expand. One meal of fine dining was delicious, two was good but for lunch I yearned for some pool food, a nice snack, I did find one sandwich on the menu but otherwise for me the menus were just too complicated for a long stay and I just didn’t want to eat seafood delicacy’s when relaxing by the pool. The menus just needed some balance and the restaurants some diversity. We looked forward to our tea reservation and it was Such a shame then that so much was wrong with afternoon tea, it’s like the chef was drinking when he thought it wise to change 200 years of history. Please understand there is no lack of skill fresh ingredients or delivery here it’s just that the combinations were truly awful. The blend of tea served as ‘English breakfast’ was just not, it was very course and bitter. The sandwich fillings were just odd, for me carrot and pesto should never be allowed in a sandwich. The bowl of berries to start was equally out of place and the scones were small and salty and didn’t justify there existence in such a refined establishment and don’t even get me started on the lack of strawberry jam and inclusion of biscuits. I’d recommend a tonic of a visit to Fortnum and Mason or Raffles to bring the ship back into line. In fact I might send Thomas and his team a true tea blend from Twinings. But hey it’s just an opinion and still an exceptional outstanding establishment with great staff.
