We ate here 2 nights and thoroughly enjoyed the food. The most delicious home made chips and the fish was lovely. Surroundings could maybe do with a bit of an upgrade and a bit of a good clean but could not fault the food or the staff who were very pleasant.

Eating in Helmsley for the first time and without a reservation we were extremely lucky to have found The Royal Oak. Friendly staff, excellent, freshly prepared, home cooked food served in a traditional pub. We thoroughly enjoyed our evening.

The hotel was great...staff friendly, good nice and homemade. The bedrooms were surprisingly good for a small hotel with quality linen, modern amenities, comfy bed and all mod cons in the room. It was much nicer than the pictures show. Would definitely stay there again

We decided to stop off here for food. After getting a seat, we stood at the bar for over ten minutes waiting to be served. The man behind the bar was in the main bar area, he was fully aware we were waiting, but chose to keep his back to us and chat to his locals! I wouldn’t mind if the place was busy…there was no one waiting to be served! I found this to be incredibly rude and very arrogant attitude of the person behind the bar! We left the pub as I will not be treated like this when I was planning to spend £80 on food here.

Good communication on booking, great friendly customer service and our food was delicious. I had steak and ale pie and Christmas pud! Really good menu with plenty of choice. Friendly young lad serving our food who had attention for detail.

We would recommend this very highly it was quieter than other establishments,We had drinks and a Christmas meal, we all thought it was lovely food and great real ale, lovely friendly staff, we will look at staying there next time we are in Helmsley.

Not a great establishment but in a nice village. Our hosts gave off an impression of not being too bothered we had arrived, our shower was dirty, the bar not too clean and the room overpriced. Why is it that some establishments assume that because their pretty village/town is popular they can up the price and provide a poor service. We had hoped to book breakfast when we arrived as the website we booked through stated. Unfortunately they needed a lot more advanced warning. We tried two other places next morning who also didn’t seem in a rush to provide the breakfast advertised. If you dnt want custom dnt advertise you are open. However there are better pubs to stay in around the area and whilst some may be dearer they are clean and provide a more professional service.

Popped in for a drink and evening meal for three adults, my wife bought two pints of larger and a double Bacardi and coke....price just over £22!!! I queried the price regarding mainly the Bacardi, it worked out at well over £11 plus! Sorry I find that unacceptable. You lost three full priced meals for that reason alone, as we then went across the road and gave the Black Swan our food order. For Marston a chain, think again on your prices!!

We went to the pub for an evening meal. I ordered the ham, chips and egg and the chips had obviously been reheated, they were cold black and shrivelled. I complained and was told it was because the chips had been cooked twice. They were disgusting. My wife had a vegetable tart and it had obviously been heated up in a microwave as all the pastry was soft and soggy. We complained to the staff and they said sorry but they did not seem to care less. Disappointing all round

On arrival in the pub we were told our room was ready early. The room we got was very large and had a great view of the square. On using the shower I noticed the silicone on the shower tray was black with mould. The water was pouring out of the electric control box. We did go to the bar staff to report this but however nothing was followed up, so decided not to use it as water and electric control boxes don't mix. The sockets were very few, and my husband and I had to pull a king size solid wood bed frame off the wall to plug in our charges. Not a great job for 2 people in there 60's. All in all the room was definitely not worth the money I paid.

We went for a drive out to Helmsley from Stockton on Tees, we only had food but it was amazing very friendly staff and the food was excellent! Would definitely recommend and be back again, didn't realise it had rooms and will probably look at staying overnight one time.

Food was okay maybe a little pricy for what it is. The barmaid was a star and so attentive but completely on her own for the whole time we were in the pub. Hope she doesn’t mind me saying this but a pregnant lady should not be left on her own all shift let alone be lifting heavy items! Management needs to have that sorted asap.

Excellent drink in a well decorated pub. The atmosphere in the pub was superb and the staff were very friendly and polite. We didn’t try the food, but other people’s food looked lovely. The garden is beautiful and the front of the pub looks very homely.

Beer was off (Hobgoblin) - it tasted like vinegar. I am a regular Hobgoblin drinker so would know. Complained to 2 members of staff but both ignored me (they clearly didn't care) and continued to serve other customers (one of whom shared by disbelief at what was going on). After escalating my complaint, I was told that I was being rude, so we just left without ordering any food.
