On my annual pilgrimage to Mumbai, India’s beating heart, I try to stay at places that have easy access to my favorite restaurants: 15 minutes by Uber to Masque and Bombay Canteen, 5 minutes to Swathi Snacks, 20 minutes to crab Mecca, Trishna. If you can’t snag a room at a relative’s home, opt for the Shalimar Hotel at Kemp’s Corner. It has become my home away from home. Perfect location, friendly staff, warm and comfortable double rooms, sumptuous suites that include complimentary breakfast at Cafe Kalma on the rooftop. Had one too ***y dirty martinis at Maikada and are too tired to stagger up to the Cafe for tapas at night? Not a problem—room service is available 24/7. My favorites: chilli cheese toast, kathi roll or butter chicken with garlic naan. Finger-lickin’ good.
