We recently stayed at Sawela Lodges from 21–24 May 2026 as part of a Rotary-related group visit and overall appreciated the hospitality and facilities. However, we were very disappointed by the currency exchange practice applied during payment. Most members of our group were paying in USD, yet the hotel insisted on converting USD at a rate of approximately 110 KES per dollar, which was significantly below the prevailing market exchange rate at the time, by nearly 30 Kenyan shillings per dollar. This created an unexpected and unfair financial difference for guests. It is also important to note that the initial rates for our stay were communicated in Kenyan Shillings, which made the later conversion to USD and the applied exchange rate even more confusing and inconsistent. Our concern is not simply about the exchange rate itself, but about transparency and professionalism. For international guests and organized groups, especially professional and service-oriented organizations like Rotary, financial clarity and fair treatment are extremely important. Had this policy been communicated clearly in advance, guests would have had the opportunity to arrange alternative payment methods. Instead, the situation left many of us feeling uncomfortable and disappointed at checkout. We hope management will review this policy and improve communication regarding exchange rates and payment terms for future international guests. Naivasha is a wonderful destination, and visitors should leave with positive memories rather than frustration over payment practices.
