My wife and I recently spent three nights at the Hotel Cannero at Cannero Riviera as part of a tour of gardens of Lakes Como and Maggiore. The position of the hotel on the lake side and our large lake view room, with balcony, could not have been bettered. The family run hotel had a welcoming atmosphere and every member of staff was friendly and helpful. The only downside to our stay was the food. Although the restaurant had an extensive à la carte menu, as half-board guests, we were given a somewhat insulting separate dinner menu that had only one or two choices for each course. This menu was uninteresting and the food was cheap, bland, mass catering which was certainly not expected in a 4* hotel. Having also eaten items from the à la carte menu, the chefs are more than capable of producing good quality, fresh Italian food. It is a pity this did not extend to half-board guests.

Superb - we like everything! Location, location and location :-) Quiet village right on a lake, delicious food for breakfast and dinner, free parking, spacious rooms, excellent friendly staff, will be glad to visit to this hotel again. Strongly recommended

This is a beautiful hotel with a lovely, old-world atmosphere, but updated in every way that is important. The location is perfect, directly on the lakeshore along the promenade. The staff is friendly and helpful. We booked a room with a lake view and enjoyed an aperitivo on the balcony every evening - it's difficult to imagine anything more pleasant!

Beautiful location, junior suite was spacious and balcony view had panoramic view of the lake. Easy access to the ferry and local restaurants. Staff were very helpful and breakfast was a great spread. Lots to do around the lake, would recommend in an instant.

A very enjoyable 3 night stay with rooms overlooking the lake at the end of September. Very attractive traditional decor. We did not use all the facilities e.g. the pool but they looked very good. Outstanding position at the pier - 50 paces from boat to bedroom !?! Access by car is along the pedestrianised waterfront, and the paid parking was worth taking as we came by car. Other than the very good breakfast buffet we ate at the other restaurants on the waterfront not in the hotel. Little points - coluld have used more power points in the bedroom and a kettle /tea-coffee making facility: also better mirrors/lighting in the bathroom. There is not a lot of other commerce in Cannero Riviera, this hotel would be excellent if you just want a peaceful spot without but for a longer stay with more choice of facilities we found Cannobbio just up the lake to be very attractive. Would not recommend Luino across the lake for a long visit - it seemed rather drab and industrial/commercial to us.

Very much enjoyed our 3 night stay. Excellent location and wonderful views from our "superior" lakeview rooms. Only a few very small criticisms stop it being 5 stars all round. 1) Only 1 mirror, a large one with not terribly good lighting, in the bathroom. 2) we found the bed rather hard. 3) It would have been nice to have a kettle and tea making facility in the room 4) and a couple more standard electric power points. 5) The shower has an emergency call cord in case of slipping etc. which is excellent. However it was tied up so high that anyone who slipped in the shower and actually would have been unable to reach it!! This is a wonderful hotel full of old world charm and style. I was lucky enough to spend two weeks here in July/August along with my Husband and 88 year old Mum who had not had a holiday abroad for many years. Our spacious rooms overlooked the beautiful lake and we had a wide, linked balcony between them for ease of access. The beds were very comfortable with a choice of pillows and there was good water pressure in the shower. The service is first class. The staff were very friendly and helpful and everyone went out of their way to make Mum's holiday special. We stayed on a half board basis. The food was delicious and beautifully presented, going above and beyond my expectations. The menu, although more limited than the full restaurant menu, changed every night with a good choice of dishes. I do not eat meat or poultry but it was never an issue as there was always a suitable option. If you are looking for a traditional hotel in a great location, full of character with excellent service and fantastic food this is the place for you. We are looking forward to returning next year.

Perhaps a 3 or a low 4. Had higher expectations really. I suppose it is how you look at it. Rooms were very dated, shabby in my opinion. Travelling with my wife, daughter and son, we had two separate rooms. Beds were pretty uncomfortable compared with other hotels we stayed in on our trip with the same price bracket. Zug, Como, Milan. The children's room had a damp smell which was next to the pool ( no I did not complain) wasn't totally offensive but just a bit, well disappointing. Pool area was packed everyday, not the hotels fault( it is a very old hotel and they can only fit in what is already there) but not really great when we are paying quite a lot of money! I cannot understand when people have said that the breakfast is great. The fruit is great but apart from that there really is little of quality, fruit juice was really watered down, in fact it tasted worse than cordial, hot buffet consisted of beans, scrambled egg and bacon none of which was very appealing. Croissants were awful. Having said this, the location of the hotel is excellent, the outside look of the hotel is very nice and the ambience surrounding the hotel is pleasant. Lake Maggiore is beautiful and this hotel sits directly next to it, overall it was a pleasant stay but not outstanding and this is the reason I would not return to the Hotel Cannero.

Heaven on earth. Love love love the hotel, lake maggiore, the staff, the room. Could have stayed forever. The restaurant food was not as gourmet as I would have liked but we had a wonderful location overlooking the lake during a lightening storm so who even would care?
