My boyfriend and I were excited to continue our anniversary trip in Egypt with a stay at Steigenberger Alaya in Marsa Alam, especially after a wonderful week at the Four Seasons in Sharm El Sheikh. Given the glowing reviews, we expected nothing but excellence, but unfortunately, our experience fell far short. The problems began even before we arrived. We tried to arrange transportation from the airport to the hotel just the day before our arrival, so perhaps it was partly our fault. However, the phone number found online didn’t work, and despite sending an email the evening before arrival, we never received a response. This left us stranded at the airport, as there arr also no taxi’s in marsa alam airport so we were forced to ask for help to a random bus that was dropping off passengers at various hotels, turning what should have been a simple journey into a long and frustrating ordeal. Upon arrival, the hotel made a great first impression. The lobby looked impressive, clean and modern. The property and main areas are clean and honestly very nice. The manager at front desk was very kind and assigned us a room with a lovely sea view. While the room was spacious, it was quite plain and you could tell the materials used were quite basic. However, we immediately sensed a foul odor in the room. Taha, the manager who was very kind throughout the stay, agreed to switch our room, however, we soon realized the smell was a the same in most rooms and just moved back to our room as it had a better view. We suspect it was coming from the fake leather parts of the bed or the Air conditioning but just gave up to it regardless of it being extremely unpleasant. The pillows were also a disappointment—too high, synthetic, and uncomfortable, especially if you sleep on your stomach like I do. When I requested a thinner pillow, I was given the same type, which did nothing to improve the situation. FOOD – the breakfast was great and we were excited to try lucnh and dinner…As someone who loves good food, this was a major letdown. Breakfast was the only decent meal, with a good selection of pastries and fresh bread. But everything else was really not acceptable and low quality. …. Things took a turn for the worse when I got food poisoning from the fish at their specialty restaurant. I could tell something was off after the first bite and stopped eating immediately, but it was too late. Within six hours, I woke up in the middle of the night with a high fever, diarrhea, and severe discomfort. I felt so sick we had to ask the hotel to call a doctor. The doctor arrived within minutes and after explain a doctor which came within minutes from calling the reception. After explaining my situation and symptoms the doctor recommended to do an IV drip in the room and also blood tests to check my overall situation. The doctor mentions the treatment would be somewhere between a couple hunderd dollars to over a thousand depending on the situation and following treatments….an
