Me and my partner have just stayed in the hotel for 5 nights while on our trip to mainly visit Amsterdam. The location of the hotel is fabulous with only a 10 minute walk to the nearby station and 15 minutes on the train to Amsterdam central, it is also next door to a spar for snacks, which were needed as the hotel only had a pancake restaurant which is not open late so after a day of exploring snacks are needed. There is a 24hr pizza vending machine outside the main entrance although we did not try it. The room was fantastic with a HUGE and very comfortable bed, beautifully decorated and very clean. The bathroom was also very clean and large. Our bed was made every day and we had clean fresh towels every day too which was very nice. Breakfast was okay, you get croissants which were amazing and rolls with butter, jam, yoghurt, cold boiled eggs and some cheese and meats. This was fine for us as we don't eat a lot in the morning and we're only there for 5 nights but I can image this would get boring if you are big on breakfast, some choice for breakfast would be great, at least to pick what kind of eggs you wanted. The location is lovely and quiet and a nice relief from the busy city where we spent most of the days. Staff were okay, the 2 lady's we saw every morning in the kitchen/ restaurant were lovely and even remembered what drinks we liked with breakfast and brought them without us even having to ask which was a nice touch, some of the other staff were much less attentive than we are used to in the UK but we found this everywhere even in the city so something to bear in mind as standards for hospitality in the UK are very different. I would definitely recommend this hotel to anyone looking to visit Amsterdam and places nearby but that may like a quieter place to stay. I think we will be booking again for our next trip there!

1) Directions to go to our room were not clear by the receptionist and we had to come back with our big luggages to ask in greater detail on how to reach our room. 2) Room location is far from the main reception (not the same building and further down the street) - this was not made clear when booking. 3) The room is barely furnished - no iron, lack of wardrobe space, only 3 pillows given. 4) Breakfast could have had more variety - e.g. no choice for how the eggs were cooked ( daily hard boiled eggs) However, the room was surprisingly spacious for a Dutch standard.

We reserved 2 separate rooms and asked for nice and quiet rooms, well in advance. Both rooms were located next to restaurant, on the ground floor, with black walls and no view at all ... Staff was very loud and busy in the evening for several hours, transporting metal barrels in front of our door (despite informing them there were guests in the rooms). Same next morning, lots of noice as of 7 o'clock. Additionally staff was tapping at 7.30 at the windows and washing, on sunday, our windows... So it was not quiet nor nice at all. Manager was not available. Breakfast was poor. One white bread and 1 croissant, hardly cheese, mainly meat. Fruit: very, very small portion in a small bowl. Coffee/tea: you had to ask for every time. You couldn't choose anything by yourself. Tv didn't give the main dutch channels. Staff hardly spoke Dutch. Would not recommend this hotel.

I took a 'nano vacation' the weekend after work in Amsterdam before returning to South Africa on Monday. I had always wanted to visit Verfmolen de Kat, and Zaanse Schans was the ideal place. I loved Boutique Hotel Zaan. It was spotless, small, and intimate, and I had the most perfect river view. The restaurant did close early and only pancakes and toasties on offer, but there were other restaurants across the street, and the breakfast was lovely! I will be back! Note to visitors - if you want to enjoy Zaanse Schans - cross the bridge before breakfast or late afternoon - before or after the Amsterdam day visitors.

I recommend to everyone. The hotel is in a beautiful location. The room is clean and comfortable. The staff is nice. The breakfast is plentiful. The entire settlement is tidy, with beautiful houses. I was impressed with the transport, so well organised. Thank you Boutique Hotel Zaan for a nice week. Thank you Holland!

A short walk from the train station and overlooking the river and windmills of Zaanse Schan this was a great location to explore this beautiful area. The room was spotless and the bed so comfortable. The staff were very friendly and arranged an early check in. The continental breakfast was delicious and fresh. An ideal spot for exploring this beautiful area - and still only a quick 20 minute train ride from central Amsterdam.

1. The annex is 100m from the hotel and the sofa bed was really uncomfortable. It has no view of the River Zaan. Given that 50% of the guests are women I was surprised there was no conditioner in the bathrooms. 2. The Restaurant (other than breakfast ) only serves pancakes and not even bitterballen snacks. The old rest ( same owner ) had a really decent italian menu but it appears staffing was cut to save costs and the menu modified as well. 3. The restaurant and bar close at 7pm so what are people / guests supposed to do after that? The staff were good and made a real effort to keep guests happy. I could go on for a while but generally the facility is not catering for the needs of its guests or making a real effort to maximise its walk in business. Very sad really for a location which could do a lot better. I personally would not stay again under the present circumstances.
