Stayed at Hotel Akureyri for 1 night after coming from Westfjords. We couldn’t have made a better choice! We felt very welcomed at check-in (got the last room of the night). It was affordable and beds were very comfortable and just what we needed. Breakfast was delicious and gave us a great start for our day of driving. Also had a nice lobby/gathering space. Parking was convenient right out in front of the hotel. I wish we would have had more time to explore the town as it was beautiful! Loved this hotel and would stay here again and recommend it to others.

This was not a hotel but an apartment, hence the name. The there wasn’t any staff on-site, they email you the code for the front door and your room. There is a book in the room with the wifi information. The room was clean and had both heat and air con. Unusual for Iceland. The rooms are a bit run down, the towels and sheets are well used. The rooms could stand to be painted. They do have a single washer and dryer that you can use for free. We did a load of laundry and it was very convenient. We enjoyed having a kitchen to cook in. It was well stocked and clean. The room smelled like the food that someone previously had made in the apartment. We ran the fan over the stove for 30 minutes and it significantly improved the air quality. Parking was limited. I would bring my own shampoo and conditioner, the apartment provided body wash but not shampoo or conditioner.

In short notice, we needed an overnight stay in Aukereyri. We found Hrafninn as the Cheapest! place with available room with private bath at a price of 370 Euro.!!! We ordered the room the same day we should stay overnight. We got information of the location of the hostel. At arrival, there were no PIN code available for our room. Nobody in the reception. We called the telephone number that we found on the wall. A person said she will come and lock us in our room. After 10 minutes waiting, she arrived, and gave us our pin code. We asked if the price included breakfast?? First she said no, but after checking it, she told us that the room was included breakfast. She told us we had to walk approx. 10 min to another Hotel to get the breakfast next morning. The room was in the basement, and we had to walk down a pretty steep and narrow stair. The room was ok, with private bathroom. The sofa in the room was not good to sit on It was broken, and when we tried to sit on it, we almost sat on the floor! There was a TV, but no remotecontrol to turn on the TV!! Next morning we walked the 10 mins to the other hotel for breakfast. She sat in the reception, and we told here we are here for the breakfast. THEN she told us, sorry, I was wrong yesterday, the room is NOT includet with breakfast. You have to pay an extra 40 Euro for the breakfast!! All in All. For the price of 370 Euro, we expected higher Quality, and altso she could offer us breakfast when we had been walking 10 min to get the breakfast she told us was included in the price. Room and service was way overpriced. First and last time we stayed here.

We were caught up in a rare extreme weather event in Iceland that resulted in road closures, which meant we needed to change our itinerary and cancel our reservation as we literally could not make it. We'd paid the booking fee to have cancellation option but the property set the cancellation date a week ahead, and we were 3 days past, and the property would do nothing for us. *********** agreed we should be refunded, given the situation was entirely out of our control (literally--no way to get there in time), and their customer service representative was very surprised when this hotel refused to do so. We had another hotel we had to cancel refund us fully even though the cancellation date was passed because they acknowledged we were stuck, and another one rebook us free of charge, and many other tourists we talked with shared similar positive experiences. I spoke with another hotel manager en route who said that they can not refund nonrefundable bookings regardless of circumstances but are always flexible with the bookings that included a cancellation date, and flexible about the date in extreme circumstances. When I described to this person that Lava Apartments refused to accommodate us in any way with a refund or option to re-book another day if we could make that work, she said that was ”just mean.” Most bizarrely, one of the staff at Lava Apartments claimed there were no road closures when we first contacted them. She seemed unable to understand we were stuck in the south of the country. We have been really surprised that this accommodation was so hard line when all our other experiences were so positive. So beware--if extreme weather (to which Iceland is prone) prevents you from keeping your reservation--even if you've paid for the cancellation option as opposed to the ”nonrefundable” booking--this hotel will hold the line and refuse to accommodate you. ”Just mean” about sums it up.
