We went to the do Mondrian Restaurant at the Xara Palace (outside seating area which you can reach from the street) whilst on a visit to Mdina. We were not guests, which is important to highlight here . We sat down at a table & at the time we were contemplating whether to eat or not or just to have a drink . A waitress came up & asked if we had been seated by staff , we had not as it was busy & were unaware we had to be. This appeared to cause annoyance &the first waitress said we had to move to another table if we wanted food . We decided just to have a drink , but then noticed the tables where we were also seated were being served food . We decided to ask why we had to move whereas the people either side could order food & the reply was because we hadn't asked to be seated . We thought this was plain discriminatory & raised it further . Another waitress came along who was extremely rude & aggressive in her response & didn't appear to care about our mention of her rude attitude. She kept saying it was a 5 star hotel & implying we shouldn't be there . She was very rude to my wife . The maitre d was also involved & wasn't Interested in how we were being treated & just agreed with his colleague We paid up & left . We were thinking of spending a lot of money & staying at the hotel next year, but after these dreadful first impressions , they have lost our custom & will take our business elsewhere. To put all this into context to how a 5 star hotel should treat customers hotel guests or not, we went to the Phoenicia Hotel in Valletta, probably the finest hotel in Malta to have a look around . The restaurant manager Simon Blok was exceptional & showed us around the hotel on his time & expense showing a healthy amount of interest in ourselves & answered all our questions on the best time to come etc . He even gave us complementary prosecco & water to enjoy in the outside restaurant . You see Xara that is how staff treat guests 5 star or not &the Phoenicia has shown you how to do it , though I believe the those particular staff at the Xara should not be working in the hospitality industry all together .
