We absolutely ADORED our stay at the Goldmoor Inn! What an incredible weekend! No detail went unnoticed, the room was sparkling clean, the staff and owners were kind and went out of their way to ensure we had everything we needed. We enjoyed drinks in the lounge two of our three nights, and we dined at the Goldmoor Restaurant on our final night -- and it was spectacular! The food, service, ambiance, everything was amazing! The setting of the Goldmoor had fantastic views and the peaceful tranquility of the grounds was so enjoyable. We stayed in the Irish Cottage that had a rockwall waterfall shower...delightful! The breakfast each morning outdid itself, and we always looked forward to the next day's. Just WOW; I can't remember the last time I stayed somewhere so quaint and perfect.
I'll start with the ”Pro's”. The location is beautiful and not too far of a drive from Galena and a few wineries. The views are spectacular (especially from the restaurant/patio). The zipline ride and alpine slide were super fun. Didn't do the boat ride because it was cancelled due to high water. The food at the restaurant was top notch - broiled shrimp dinner, walleye strips, spicy chicken salad wrap, burger to name a few were all good. ”Con's”. Overall the hotel needs a good refresh/update. Looks like it hasn't seen much change since the 80's/90's. Carpet in hallways is worn; lobby is bare and uninviting; walls, doors, door frames are pretty beat up. There is no elevator so if you're on the fourth floor like we were, take that into account. The pool was okay but the whirlpool was stained and the water level so low, the jets were shooting out above the water line. We didn't use either. No mattress or pillow protectors which is pretty gross. The room was small . . . I mean SMALL as was the bathroom (no sink cabinet just a small shelf for two people to put their things on). It was 'clean enough' but just the overall 'feel' was not that clean. Carpet was old and worn and the TV appeared to be about 10 years old. Didn't even have 'stereo' just mono and was hard to hear. Picture was awful . . . not HD and while I'm not a big TV watcher, you really couldn't enjoy watching anything because it was so fuzzy. Final Take: Go there for dinner, the alpine slide or zipline ride but no reason to stay there with so many better options available.
Came up for the weekend with my wife. To get the positive out of the way, the outside was very nice with a nice overlook of Galena. Now for the bad. We stayed in the smaller rooms of the main building. First look over there was grime on the walls and bathroom door. As if they had never been cleaned. The bed felt as if all the middle springs were toast. When you laid down you pulled to the center as if there was a crater in the center of the bed. Next there quite a few bugs that I had to take care of including spiders, mosquitos, and moths. I did let the front desk know about the grime when we went to grab breakfast from the office (mediocre by the way, I just grabbed coffee) and they did clean the walls, but the bathroom door was still disgusting. Now the big issue came the next night, note the bugs. I noticed something crawling by the bed and killed it. Upon inspection it was a Roach and that I'm not cool with in the least bit. When there is one, there is more, so we packed carefully after inspecting all of our belongings as to not bring one home, we hauled out of there. On the way out I gave the office emergency phone number a call as they are gone by 9 pm. I spoke to the least concerned woman when I told her about the roach. She wanted me to believe that it was not a roach and that it was some other bug she could not name. As if it was somehow possible she was in the room and had seen what I had seen. I informed her that I would be requesting a refund and she said she would talk to me about it the following morning. I informed her the body was in some tissue on the side table if she needed to see it herself. I figured this would be more urgent, but never received a call the next morning. Instead I called them to no answer. I then receive a text that she was not in the office that day and would call me the NEXT day even though she said she would talk to me that morning. I eventually did get a call after 2 pm way past the window she said she'd call me, so that was missed as I was no longer expecting a call. I called back to a no answer and then immediately received an unprofessional in my opinion text letting me know she couldn't talk. I informed her instead of playing a phone tag game. I will instead go through the third party booking agent, as playing phone tag to this degree is ludicrous and the lack of concern is more so. They did after I told them I'm moving on leave me another message declaring that the bug was a stink bug and nothing to worry about. I will post my pictures, so anybody that has the slightest clue as to what a stink bug looks like (Or a simple google search), would know this isnt the case. In summary poor customer service skills, dirty rooms, mediocre breakfast, and above all roaches!
