The comfort, location, and facilities of the hotel were a good value and would normally deserve a higher rating. In fact, dinner that night in the restaurant was excellent. We graded it down because of the unfriendliness of Edgar, the owner. When we first walked in, he greeted us with a hostile attitude that gave the impression that we were bothering him. At dinner, there was a misunderstanding about my wife’s order and rude and insulting before he corrected the order. The way he treated us was in marked contrast to the friendly, laughing way he treated his German guests. We didn’t know what we had done to upset him and concluded that maybe he just didn’t like Americans. That impression was confirmed at breakfast the next morning when he made a cutting remark about how things are done in America as compared to Germany. On this trip we were in Germany and Switzerland for the entire month of September and had uniformly friendly and courteous interactions with the staffs of all of other hotels.

It was an excellent stay - the service was very nice, tasty dinner, convenient location. Highly recommended for the area.

Restaurant/bar favorite of locals this time of year. Owner is very friendly and helpful if need some local travel tips.

Fabulous traditional food. It is always a good sign when a restaurant is packed with locals ( some were even turned away) We were staying the night so got a table. The schnitzel with mushrooms in cream sauce was divine. The breakfast the following day was also wonderful and we were invited to pack ourselves a lunch from the breakfast platter. Brilliant!

We spent 3 nights at the Hotel Deutsches Haus during our recent hike of the Rheinsteig/RheinBurgenWeg (or, as we call it, "The Rhine Roam". Our room was modest but clean...no air. But the owner, Edgar, was simply the best. His service was fantastic and we enjoyed his sense of humor. His brother (Willi) is the chef and a damned good one. We will never forget our dinners on their outdoor deck...wonderful meals coupled with a bottle of GB Sauvage Riesling (2012). Great memories! The breakfasts were wonderful and we were encouraged to pack anything extra for lunch....which we dutifuly did each day. While there might be more comfortable rooms elsewhere in town, the experience of the Deutsches Haus was one of the highlights of our trip. We'd do it again tomorrow. Thank you Edgar! John & Pam

After 500 reviews (probably 200 each hotels and restaurants)I give only a few five star ratings. Both the hotel and attached restaurant get full marks thanks to the charming and helpful host (Edgar?). Don’t get me wrong the room was small but spotlessly clean and well appointed. The evening meal at the restaurant was not sophisticated, but rather something much harder to: simple food done really well with an interesting flavour profile. Breakfast was generous, tasty and served in a Covid appropriate manner. I was on a walking holiday and the hotel provided the makings of a wonderful picnic lunch that I enjoyed on a bench in a peaceful forest that afternoon. What made everything work was Edgars charm humour and warmth. Would I stay anywhere else in Kalb, never!

Herrlich! Auf unserer Rheinsteig-Wanderung hatten wir das "Hotel Deutsches Haus" als eine der Zwischenstationen gewählt. Selten einen so unkomplizierten Check-In erlebt 😀 Da wir am Restaurant-Ruhetag dort waren, gab's direkt gute (und für uns passende) Empfehlungen, wo wir hingehen könnten, wir haben uns direkt für das Nachbarlokal am Brunnen entschieden und wurden nicht enttäuscht. Die Zimmer waren funktional aber liebevoll eingerichtet (herrlich war das "Geh-Wohl"-Balsam für die Füße, was wir als Wanderer natürlich gerne genommen haben...). Beim morgendlichen Frühstück wurden wir gleich damit überrascht, dass wir uns ohne Aufpreis "Jausepakete" basteln durften. Das ist auch ein total großartiger Service. Der Gastvater ist offensichtlich sehr engagiert und konnte uns mit ganz vielen Tipps und Hinweisen unsere Wanderung erleichtern (die Hinweise zum "Turner-Weg" waren großartig - das hätten wir ohne ihn garantiert übersehen). =＞ Sehr gerne wieder! Sehr gutes Abendessen / Speisekarte, Frühstück ebenfalls sehr gut. Ambiente im Restaurant modern und freundlich. Zimmer einfach aber zweckmäßig.
