I had a poor experience at the Sheraton in Novi while staying with a family member to celebrate a belated Christmas as we weren't able to get together around Christmas proper. While I was upgraded to a room on the club lounge floor, the guest room I received was not clean by any definition of clean. There was hair on the desk and desk chair, hair on the toilet, hair under the toilet seat, hair on the wrapped bar of soap and soap dish, stains on the desk, and stains on the face tissue container. The single bathrobe hanging in the closet appeared to have been previously worn and didn't have a cincture. On my reservation I specifically requested only 100% feather pillows. My reservation also requested a bathrobe, slippers, extra pillows and extra towels. I didn't receive any of those things. The four pillows were four polyester down-alternative pillows. Those pillows are horrible. They always feel like someone stuffed cotton balls in a pillowcase. During check-in I noticed a sign at the front desk saying daily housekeeping is not provided, unless specially requested. The major cleanliness issues that I experienced are a direct result of what happens when hotels don't clean rooms and other spaces each and every day. I received zero Marriott Bonvoy elite status recognition. Specifically, I was not offered the choice at check-in of breakfast in the restaurant, an amenity or points. I complained to the general manager, who to his credit acknowledged the lack of cleanliness was unacceptable, fully apologized and took responsibility. To resolve the issue, he offered to comp my stay and ensure that the room was thoroughly cleaned while we were out of the room and off-property at a nearby shopping mall. He also apologized for the lack of Bonvoy recognition and provided the $100 cash compensation that is required by Marriott for not offering guest with platinum or higher Bonvoy status the choice at check-in of breakfast in the restaurant, an amenity or points. When we returned, the room was properly cleaned. The pillows were replaced with feather pillows, although none of the feather pillows had pillow protectors or pillowcase liners. Two clean bathrobes and two pairs of slippers were placed in the closet. The general manager was also kind enough to leave a bottle of wine in the room. My family member was really appreciative of that gesture. Despite the issues, the staff that I encountered throughout the stay were polite, welcoming and hospitable. That aside, there was zero excuse for the cleanliness issues or the lack of attention to what was specified on the reservation The club lounge was open with an average evening offering that included a selection of assorted cheeses, crackers, grapes, fruit and some basic canapés. Besides free nonalcoholic drinks, an honor bar featured cheap house wine ($5 retail bottles of wine) selling for $5 a glass. The club lounge is a nice smaller space. Stayed a weekend here while attending a volleyball event downtown Detroit. Paid half the price of staying downtown and it was only about a 15-20 minute drive in so it wasn't bad. Check in was easy, room was clean and although there was some cosmetic things that could be fixed, it was at least clean. Wasn't able to use the pool or fitness area, but they both looked clean from the door. Though I heard the pool was out of towels and there was a lot of water in the hallway leading to pool. We had an issue with our fridge, but they rectified that to our satisfaction, beyond what we would expect. The only complaint (use that lightly) is that we had to leave the hotel by 7:05 to get downtown in time and we asked if it was possible to get breakfast before 7:00 and it was a flat ”no”. Worth a try I guess as most other hotels are very accomodating to this and will even offer to go bags ready to go for early departures. Just an idea for future, perhaps.

Overall, the hotel is clean and well maintained. However When we arrived to check in, our room was not ready until around 3:25 PM which was very disappointing, as we were very tired from driving long hours.
During the night, the cleaning guy at the lobby was very noisy, speaking loudly on his phone speaker, while we were trying to relax and have coffee, thus we left the whole lobby for him and went to our rooms.

RResort735688I decided to stay in this hotel because it would allow me to go to a very important early morning appointment without dealing with as much traffic. I also chose it because I wanted to soak in a jacuzzi tub before my stressful appointment. First off, the parking lot was very dimly lit and there were no detectable cameras on the lot. The elevator was out of order, as was the ice machine and one of the vending machines. When I was checking in, the desk clerk literally made a paper copy of my credit card and ID, and reassured it was just for incidentals. I reserved and paid through the choice hotels app ahead of time, and am an elite platinum member. I can understand an incidental hold, but that made me very nervous. I requested to be moved to the first floor at check-in because the elevator was broken and I'm disabled and couldn't handle bringing everything up the stairs. The first floor hotel room that they gave me had a window that didn't lock and had been broken and forced open previously. There was something smeared on the toilet seat. Everything was shabby and dark with crumbs in the sheets. Then our credit card started alerting us to additional UNAUTHORIZED charges. Our card was charged AGAIN for the room. After that, ANOTHER charge which was the room + $100 was charged to the card, but the credit card company rejected it. I went down and talked to the desk clerk again, and talked to him about the problems with the room. He offered to move us up to the second floor, but we turned it down because again, I'm disabled. He offered to help me find something to jam the window but he just forgot or something. As for the charges, he claimed he didn't know I had booked with the app (apparently didn't know it was even a thing), and apparently reversed the charge. He claimed the charge that the card company rejected was for incidentals. A paper copy of my card and driver's license wasn't enough security for him so he charged my card an extra UNAUTHORIZED $230 without saying anything to me . I only learned of these unauthorized charges because Capital One alerted me later that evening. The employee assured me the manager could clear up any other questions in the morning. I went back to my room, rinsed down the jacuzzi tub (and removed a bunch of random hairs in it) and filled it with hot water. It took a LONG TIME to fill. I got in, scrubbed down, made sure I had followed the directions to turn on the jets... and nothing. No jets. I had my spouse take a look and Google it, and there was nothing I could do. My spouse and I seriously discussed leaving and finding a different hotel for the night . It was well after 11pm at this point, so I just drained the tub and decided to deal with it in the morning after my appointment.
