It is not ALL about the BRAND Mr Shamoon… Because I was a guest of honour at a dinner party on Friday 3rd May, at Coya… I could not complain from the table as I did not wish to embarrass my host. However my host does not miss much and he would have noticed. I have been visiting restaurants regularly at Puente Romano since the early 1980s and I have watched it evolve from a very tired Property with a bar by the Roman Plaza that was so bad it was a joke amongst regulars. From this state the property was purchased at a knockdown price by a highly talented hotel entrepreneur who brought in the most amazing management and they turned it around, creating one of the best hotels in Marbella with quite an array of excellent restaurants. The hotel encompasses a substantial number of different restaurants and I mentioned some of them below within the context of this review as they are all under the same hotel umbrella. I always had a soft spot for Robertos which is now called Sea Grill, for which I have posted wonderful past reviews apart from after my last visit when I considered it perfectly fair to criticise. I do try to be lavish with my praise and very careful with my criticism but it had gone downhill and numerous regulars who live locally have exactly the same opinion. Obviously I have heard of Coya. As with Nobu and Cipriani, this is a brand which is spreading. It has taken over the space at Peunte Romano where Serafina used to be prior to their lease not being renewed (to make way for yet another ‘brand’ of which there are plenty…). Whatever happened to quality? While filling the property with brands might up the profits, the quality, reputation and word-of-mouth is diminishing. This was a terrific property which did not need fixing under the previous general manager. Is this progress? Serafina amassed 462 reviews on Tripadvisor alone of which 309 were ‘excellent’ and ‘110’ very good. While not a brand, Serafina was good honest food served well, with the two owners who are brothers as superb hosts…and a visit was always enjoyable. Sarafina had 4.5 stars on Tripadvisor. Coya only has 3.5 stars and of their 81 reviews on Tripadvisor at time of my visit their second highest category of reviews is “Terrible” and 40% of their Tripadvisor reviews to date are either “Average” “Poor” or “Terrible.” My advice is that you read the reviews before you think about reserving a table. A few friends have already dined here and were unimpressed. I would have avoided visiting altogether but I was invited, as a guest. I found the service totally unacceptable. Will I ever be going back? Not unless I am again invited by friends as a guest. But next time I go even if I am a guest and they remove my €140 steak dish, they will not get away with it again. When I was only halfway through my plate, while my attention was focused on a conversation to my right, the waiter removed my main course...and threw it away. This was in fact the main course which the waite
