A quirky former paint factory (so they told us) set about 15 minutes walk downhill to the riverside of the beautiful River Douro, with all the cafes, restaurants and port museums. Hotel fairly grand looking and hotel staff all smartly attired. We were upgraded to a lovely suite with window overlooking the Douro. Negative for everyone else that all other rooms had windows facing into the courtyard which seemed a poor design. Buffet breakfast adequate, evening meal adequate.
We booked a deluxe room for our 5 night stay at The Lodge as we wanted the balcony, however the balcony is closed in with no sunlight and overlooking a noisy street. The room was small and dark and sleep was more difficult due to the noisy road. The pool was nice but very busy at weekends and sometimes no sunloungers available. I liked the location in Gaia away from the crowds of Porto and if staying in this locale visit the WOW museum as this was excellent. My biggest bugbear with this hotel is the housekeeping was poor, on two separate days I had to ask them to clean the room as we had been left until 7pm with no housekeeping. Then when they did come it was bare minimum and floors weren’t vacuumed, mirrors not cleaned mouldy fruit left in the bowl etc. If you are going to charge 5 star prices you need to do better than this. Breakfast was ok but nothing special.
Checked in on 18/04/23 for a birthday treat with a friend. Staff were very courteous, nothing too much trouble. Hotel was spotlessly clean, and breakfast was plentiful. My roommate forgot her toothbrush and was given a free toothbrush and toothpaste. Happily printed off our boarding passes for us for our flights home. 10/10
