Avalanche Level 1: for Skiers and Split-boarders 1/26-1/28 is a highly recommended 3-day class that serves as the bedrock standard for safe backcountry travel. This course follows the American Avalanche Association Guidelines(A3) and takes place in multiple locations near Steamboat Springs, including Hayden, Clark, and Craig, in the beautiful Northwest Colorado. Participants can choose to take the first day of classroom sessions via ZOOM on January 23rd and 25th to accommodate their schedule. 

Led by Avalanche Savvy, this comprehensive training program equips individuals with the essential knowledge and skills needed to make informed decisions in avalanche-prone environments. The curriculum covers crucial topics such as avalanche types, snowpack analysis, terrain assessment, route finding, and rescue techniques. By understanding the factors contributing to avalanches, participants are empowered to assess the avalanche risk and make educated choices to minimize exposure. 

The course combines classroom instruction with practical field exercises to provide a well-rounded learning experience. In the classroom, participants delve into avalanche theory, weather patterns, and daily decision-making cycles. They also learn to use essential tools like transceivers, probes, and shovels for effective companion rescue. Field sessions allow participants to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios, honing skills such as snowpack stability assessments and safe travel techniques. 

Upon completion of the Avalanche Level 1 class, participants receive a class completion certificate and a complimentary membership to the Friends of CAIC for the rest of the season. Additionally, all students receive a free trial pro-account for Caltopo.
