Having travelled down from Brussels and a 4 Star plus hotel I was interested in how the 3 Star Hotel Beatus would compare. As expected one was better than the other however it was the 3 Star Hotel Beatus which was clearly the superior hotel. From the moment we arrived at reception we got a very cheery Bonjour from the manager who was looking after the reception, he clearly expected us and checked us in with minimum fuss, we then had a chat about the trip down, the weather, the hotel cat (he was asleep on a chair in the corner) and why we were visiting Cambri. Philippe (the manager) always seemed to be around and have time for a chat, he was extremely helpful and friendly but you also go the impression that he ran a very tight ship as there was an air of quiet efficiency around the place. The decor of the hotel could be described as "shabby chic" however there was nothing shabby about it, the hotel was spotless and all the fittings and decor were in good repair and the hotel oozed character, the dark grey walls and clear personal attention to decor made it clear this was not part of a chain and we enjoyed it even more for recently being in a hotel which could have been any one of a hundred! The room was a good size, excellent bathroom and shower (spotless) but most of all the room overlooked the garden and the giant tree which was in blossom, I can only say it was beautiful. We were there in April but the silence and quality of light made us open the windows completely even if it was a bit chilly, I can only imagine how wonderful it is in the summer. I suppose I am leaving the best to last, the breakfast! As I said we had just come down from Brussels and a 4 Star + hotel and had a €29 breakfast in what can only be described as a bunker under the hotel and been offered the usual buffet of questionable scrambled egg and dodgy coffee, I was expecting something similar, how wrong was I. The Beatus breakfast is €12 and is served in the "morning room" and overlooks the garden and that gorgeous tree in bloom, we were about to go looking for the buffet when who appeared at our shoulder but the inimitable Philippe who showed us to our table in the corner by the window. We were asked if we wanted scrambled egg and bacon, we declined the bacon, we were then offered Tea, Coffee or Hot Chocolate, we went for the Coffee. As Phillipe disappeared we were then presented with a choice of yogurts and fruits, after which a basket with a, still warm, fluffy, delicious Croissant and a small fresh fresh fresh baguette, was placed on the table, this was followed by 2 small pots of the most delicious FRESHLY BREWED coffee, I had asked for milk with my coffee and when the coffee arrived it was accompanied by a small jug of WARMED milk (heaven)! As I was finishing the Croissant, a small plate of FRESHLY cooked scrambled eggs arrived at the table, they can only be described as perfect. The breakfasts we got in Hotel Beatus were not complex and could be descr
