Our stay at Phaedra Hotel on Hydra was so perfect that we decided to stay 3 extra days rather than visit any other islands. Phaedra offers a terrific home base for visiting this unique island. It is located a short walk from the port - far enough away to be quiet and close enough not to require a lot of uphill hiking when you simply want to go to one of the many shops and restaurants on the waterfront. Speaking of food, breakfast at Phaedra was one of the highlights of each day. It is served on a rooftop balcony and was truly bountiful. Each morning we had fresh juice, pastries and bread from the best local bakery, a homemade savory pastry, hard boiled eggs, tomatoes, feta, yogurt, local honey and homemade jams. Our room had its own balcony overlooking the cobblestone street with a view of the mountains in one direction and the port in the other. At night we could close the shutters and windows and enjoy a quiet rest. Others in our group chose to sleep with their windows open and woke to the sounds of the roosters, birds and local activity. The bed was comfortable and the room was well appointed with plenty of closet and drawer space and lots of hangers. We had a small kitchen stocked with water, an electric kettle and tea. There is a two burner stove and refrigerator if you choose to cook. The best part of staying at Phaedra is Hilda. She is warm and welcoming and was ready to help us with any special needs. She can arrange excursions, point you to the best restaurants and shops and help with drivers to and from the ferry and airport in Athens. If you have not been to Hydra before you are in for a treat. The lack of cars make it truly unique retreat from the noise and haste of modern life. We spent our days hiking the mountains, enjoying the water and just sitting still. The sunsets are also truly magical. If I could give this trip 6 stars I would.
