We stayed here for the night. We arrived mid-afternoon and we were welcomed by the staff and shown to our room. Our room was a twin (as this was the only room that was left). It was pleasant, bright, and clean with a decent size bathroom which had a bath/shower, tea and coffee facilities too. We had drinks and food at the bar and all was good. The food was tasty and the drinks were good. Breakfast was tasty and there is a good varied choice. When I read some of these reviews I was rather surprised. Please don’t let them put you off. Yes this is an old building, yes it’s a little tired but we had a comfortable, pleasant stay and the location is good and the staff are lovely.

Stayed during Wainwrights Coast to Coast Walk. I arrived half an hour before check in and was kindly allowed to my room. Quad room was everything a group needed to shower and recover. Downstairs in the bar area was chilled and relaxing with some amazing food on offer. Steak was perfection. Bed for the night was well needed and extremely comfortable. Breakfast was fantastic and would love to take the missus here for a night or two in the future.

Staff were lovely and attentive. Place was clean and tidy. Food was tasty but can't get over the portion size, very small! The burger I had came with literally 8 chips,no garnish, colslaw, no sides - nothing just a basic small bacon and cheese burger. My boys kids burger that came with beans and one less patty would have been around the same size meal over all. It's as if they have stood there and decided how little food they can get away with putting on a plate for £12.50.

Went for Sunday lunch, booked table, waited 15 mins and hadn't taken order, went to get our own drinks and another 15 mins eventually took order waited and waited and still no food, nothing wrong with the waitresses and they tried their best, it's down to greed from owners, not a paying customers prob their short staffed will never go back

Easter night away for birthday. Waited in bar for key and told room not ready - 10 minutes later asked for key from different staff and given ? Room dated and tired. Visible dust in all wood surfaces so staff asked to clean. Bed sloped to one side, wardrobe is an old dirty cupboard with one coat hanger, and toilet cistern filled with water all night. Rubbish nights sleep , followed by an average greasy breakfast with football blaring on telly that none was watching! Avoid spending your hard earned cash here

My pregnant wife and I stopped for food here spontaneously, it was very busy for a Tuesday and it was potentially understaffed. With that in mind the service was exceptional and the fort was held by a lady in her 40s (whitish hair) She made amends for my wife, dealt with a complaint very professionally when a customer was being rude to her, did not stop for a second in the few hours we were there but gave the job she was doing her 100%. The food was great and a good price too. I recommend this place for a calm, relaxing atmosphere especially for couples.

Characterful building, decor and rooms. Clean and comfortable. The breakfast is below par for the price, because of this we chose not to dine there on either of the evenings. The staff are friendly, however, the waiting on staff are perhaps more focussed on their own priorities.

We parked in the car park at the back which is very tight and our car was scrapped due to someone parking where they shouldn't and making it difficult for others to get out, need to have yellow no parking zones painted on. The room was nice though a little tired and paint was peeling on the walls, comfy bed and clean but very warm. Breakfast looked great and we ate it as we were hungry but it was cold the plates were warm but food stone cold on both mornings, unsure how you can do that but they did, hotel itself is a lovely old building and the bar area is busy and really nice, but if we go to Richmond again wont be staying here

We held our 40th wedding anniversary dinner here, Tracy and her team could not have been more helpful. They made sure that everything was exactly as we had requested. The food was plentiful and tasted great. Their hospitality is beyond reproach. Well done to you all and thank you.

Diabolical service. I can honestly say it was the worst customer experience I have ever experienced. The manageress so defensive about her own inability to look after her customers. Very, very slow servce, cold food, orders not put through the system, no recognition that there was a problem. Spoilt our trip to Richmond from Brighton. I have stayed in the hotel on previous visits but never again. A truly awful experience. Training required.

A wonderful stay... having a long journey from Guernsey, we arrived at the hotel to brilliant service, a lovely room. We ate at the hotel that night, food was lovely, great value and after a fabulous night sleep we had breakfast. Options were perfect, catering for me and the husband (veggies) and our young children! The children were disappointed to leave, wanting to stay longer! Thank you The Merris's 😊

Just been to this hotel and payed for 2 nights....rooms are too warm and they have the most uncomfortable beds we have ever slept on well what little sleep we did have...to sum it up it was like sleeping in a carrier bag...we could not manage another night there so we left next day 16 hours after we arrived due to back and neck ache......would not recommend.

Staying in the area occasionally for work I have been in twice recently for a meal. Snug atmosphere, great beers, good food and service. Loved the venison pie this week, and the draught ales were served really well. Good prices as well. Car park plus free parking in the Market Place.

Me and my partner called into the black lion with our dog Monty after taking Monty for a long walk. We called in for a pint and the lovely bar lady Michelle made a massive fuss over monty, he lived the attention.
