The hotel is fantastic, the cleanliness is excellent every member of staff is very helpful and can’t do enough for you.Our room was on the ground floor because I didn’t want stairs and it was very spacious with a balcony, the beds were very comfortable and the room is cleaned every day if you want, the bathroom was modern and very well maintained with a powerful hot shower, there is plenty of hanging space with hangers and drawer space, optic drinks are in your room and a fridge with water and soft drinks. The WiFi was very good throughout the complex even on the beach. The dining options are excellent with plenty of choice at every sitting and plenty of seating….however the ala carte dining options can be difficult to book…. we booked as soon has we arrived.Sunbathing is easy with plenty of sun beds…..if you can’t get one around the pool areas there are plenty on the beach among the palm trees. The lobby bar can be hard to get a seat in the evening….and if you sit outside in the evening you probably need a jacket or shawl it gets cool when the sun goes down.If you want a taxi ask at reception and then wait outside,a taxi into sainta Marina costs 5euros.The hotel has a cash machine but gives out only local currency, the shops like euros the banks ask you to draw out local currency then exchange it in the bank for euros and you will need ID,most shops take debit cards. All in all I would recommend staying here,it’s been a great pick me up with the glorious weather in January.
Thanks to everybody at the hotel for a wonderful 10 days. really could not fault it - quite near the main town -nice friendly little Portuguese bar nearby - and shops - we had B+B which was perfect. good pool for adults and kids alike. No sunbed wars thankully :-) Santa Maria is certainly more vibrant than when we went 5 years ago - Highly recommend this hotel as a good base to explore.
Second stay at the Funana and it was every bit as good as the first stay. Came with parents and sister and brother in law this time. Accommodation absolutely fine, not European 5 star but not European 5 star price either so be realistic in your expectations. Food was great, one vegan, one vegetarian amongst party. Good selection of drinks. One of our party is a wheel chair user and the whole hotel is easily accessible. (could do with a wooden walkway on the first part of the beach or a beach wheelchair). Did a couple of tours and walked into Santa Maria again a couple of times. Weather was windy and sunny. Cannot fault it really, great value and just booked again. We don't have kids, and didn't find it too busy with children, actually added a bit of life into the place which can be lacking in all adult hotels.
We knew that we were going into an all-inclusive resort with all it entails. However, after 2 stays (at the arrival and before departure as our flights were from this island), we can say that we are more than disappointed. At the arrival, our room was supposed to be ready at 15.00. We had to wait more than an hour (with our very tired 3 year-old daughter). I had to stay at the desk to push the employees to get our room. The room itself was ok even though the 2nd bed (it was supposed to be a family room) was an uncomfortable couch. And we had a cockroach !!! Regarding the resort : This is a tourist factory !! The employees really don't care for you. Several times, we asked questions, and the employee barely answered and turned around. So unprofessional !! Some stuff is supposed to open at 10 (bars, desk for towels, ...). If you are lucky, at 10.30 you might find someone. We only ate at the buffet as the other restaurants were booked full for a full week ahead ! Let's say the food of the buffet is more than average (to say the least). We went once for lunch at the snack restaurant and it was so boring and flat. At the buffet, employees are such in a hurry to clean the tables that even after telling them not to empty our table ... they did it anyway and threw away 2 full plates. Such a waste of food. The kid pool is in a very poor state (see pictures) and could be considered as dangerous. I am still trying to find the positive aspects, but honestly, it's hard to find some between the poor facilities, the behavior of employees, the average food, ... I don't know if other resorts on the island are better, but if I go back to Cap Verde, I won't go back to this resort !!!
This was our second visit, the first was Jan 2021. We enjoyed it so much that we wanted to come back. Overall, we found parts of the resort tired and in need of refurbishment, especially the pool area. There are some tiles lifting that are quite dangerous. Our room was pleasant, clean but tired. The shower leaked but worked adequately. Some of the Sunbeds are quite grubby, but hey, we put towels on them anyway!😊. It's not all bad, but unfortunately, it clearly isn't 5 star. ALL the staff we encountered were extremely friendly, happy, and made for a great holiday. The pool bar staff are real characters and make for a great time. 🍹🍸. Now to the dreaded Sunbed reserving, yes, this was apparent in our first week but was nipped in the bud in our second week. Personally, we found snooze you lose and we had no issues getting the sunbeds we wanted as being early risers🌞. As sun lovers, we found there are a lot of shaded areas and lots of sunbeds that make it feel a bit crammed, kind of on top of each other. This time around, we found the buffet to be excellent and didn't experience any upset stomachs, unlike last time. Our tip is to use sanitiser gel AFTER you've loaded your plates as everyone else uses the same tongs. We're convinced that made a big difference. There's plenty of options in the buffet to suit everyone. We spent most of our holiday around the pool as we enjoy relaxing, soaking up the sun and reading books. We did try the beach but found it wasn't a private beach and very intimidating with locals trying to sell excursions..arguing with each other loudly over business..not pleasant at all. The entertainment team are bundles of energy. The overall vibe is pleasant and relaxing. Unfortunately, you can't pick and choose who else turns up as we did experience a couple of loud groups that turned a few heads!...it isn't that kind of resort. It definitely wasn't last time. The lobby bar and outside seating area make for a very relaxed atmosphere in the evenings...the Cappuccino coffee bar is a must if you enjoy a proper coffee...we'd recommend the baileys coffee 👌. Overall, we understand you can't cater for everyone. We enjoyed our stay but won't be returning...shame really as our first visit was faultless other than the food.
