I stay in many Premier Inns and decided to stay in this Travelodge as I’ve been once before and thought it was okay enough to give it another go, this time for 5 nights. I had a ’Super’ room on the 9th floor. The Pros It’s very close to Twickenham station. The Cons The lobby area / reception frequently STINKS of cigarette smoke. The staff either smoke in the back room and / or just outside the front doors, which blows it all back in. It’s revolting and incredibly unprofessional. The road outside and general area is very noisy, especially at weekends. The glazing works okay-ish (not great) but without any air-conditioning you will be boiling in summer if you keep the window closed. So bring earplugs and ask for one of their fans which apparently are kept somewhere. The room is much smaller than Premier Inns (you can just move around the bed) and there is no fridge in the room. Unlike the Premier Plus rooms, the lighting is stark: most noticeable in the bathroom. There is only standard tea but there is a lavazza coffee machine. The room was grubby. The carpet was the kind you definitely wouldn’t want to walk on barefoot. The shower curtain and taps were dirty and there’s a gap to the floor so that water spills everywhere. There’s no safe in the room. Travelodge say they don’t automatically clean rooms when you stay so I’d love to know why, on two occasions, a cleaning staff member burst into my room when it was locked. When they found me inside they apologised and said they ‘must have got the wrong room number’ which made me suspicious. In addition, the front desk is invariably unstaffed and anyone can wander into the lift area without a pass. I did not feel personally secure in the hotel. I wouldn’t leave anything behind that you value when you go out ... Then early on a bank holiday monday morning there a thumping knock on the door and a shout of ‘MAINTENANCE’. I was resting after a big day so replied, ‘What maintenance?’ ‘We have to clean the shower heads.’ ‘Well you can’t. I’m resting. Please come back another time.’ ‘It’s a LEGAL REQUIREMENT’ - shouted back at me. ‘Go away and do it another time.’ The whole experience was pretty rubbish to be frank. Premier Plus rooms are far better. If it’s just for one night you should be okay though.
