この網走刑務所博物館は、北海道網走郊外の天都山のふもとにあり、100年以上の歴史を持つ実際の刑務所を改築したオープン博物館です。網走観光バス路線の最初のアトラクション。かつては網走刑務所内の労働や生活施設などの建物が山腹各所に点在していたが、年代が古くほとんどが破損していたため、現在見られているのはそのまま復元されたものである。博物館には近代的な刑務所歴史館があり、網走刑務所の歴史と監督施設の状況を体系的に紹介しています。網走刑務所博物館の中で最も重要な文化財は、保存状態の良い監舎です。他の整然と並ぶ監舎とは異なり、この監舎はスポーク状の構造をしている。
