Fox Glacier is 13 kilometers long and slopes down 2600 meters from Southern Alps in the South Alps. Four alpine glaciers accumulate snow about 30 meters deep each year and inject it into Fox Glacier. Snow compresses into blue snow hundreds of meters deep at the top of the glacier, slides down the mountain to the valley below, and falls on ice 300 meters thick. The pressure between the glacier and the steep canyon soil causes part of the snow to melt, providing lubrication for this movement.
