Our first ryokan experience and very comfortable. Only issue is that we did not stay longer! We had a Japanese style room and diner was served in a lightly curtained off space in the restaurant. We were lucky enough to be able to book the private forest onsen space. Lovely airy spaces in the hotel including lounge spaces. Shuttle bus from end of walk Magone to Tsumago and to Station in the morning worked well.

We stayed here one night at the end of a walk along the Nakasendo way from Magome to Tsumago. The hotels shuttle bus picked us up. It’s about 20 minutes drive. I was given a choice of yukata to wear, but not my husband (as if he cared anyway!) We had a Japanese style room with a small balcony and after a delicious dinner in our own little dining cubicle, we came back to our room to find futons laid out on the floor. We didn’t try the onsen and unfortunately the private onsen was fully booked until 10pm. Breakfast was also Japanese cuisine. The serving staff were delightful. There is a guest lounge where you can help yourself to tea and coffee and newspapers. We were driven to the train station after breakfast. I’m not sure what other activities are available if you were to stay longer. One slight negative- the ensuite bathroom in our room was a bit dated. Overall, it was a great experience.

What a wonderful, peaceful location in the mountains. We stayed for one night on our Nakasendo walk - before heading off for the tough walk over the Nenoue Touge pass to Nojiri. The hotel is beautifully set up and our meals were stunning - all good preparation for that walk...

We stayed for a couple of days after a hectic spell in Tokyo. Everything is perfect: the wooded, rural setting, the delightful accommodation, the unbelievable food served by charming staff, the onsen, the shuttle bus service and communicating by voice translator when checking arrangements! Nothing was too much trouble. I wish our prebooked trip had allowed us to stay longer. Hotels should be like this.

After a visit to Tsumago, the stay at Fuki no Mori was absolutely delightful. Nestled in the hills, it was beautifully set and is a wonderful property. We stayed in a western style room which was very comfortable. Dinner, in a private room with a traditional Japanese meal, was excellent and the service was wonderful. We stayed there just because we needed a place nearby near Tsumago and it turned out to be a great find.
