As a city dweller and designer, I have kept returning to Karoo Art Hotel every year over 10yrs as a home away from home. She is old fashioned and has a lot of old world charm where the staff have become like familiar friends. It’s a place where I can wind down from the demons of pristinity so prevalent in today’s expectations of modern man to feel more at ease and relaxed amongst other guests looking for the same thing…almost like an early traveller from my grandfathers time. Each room/suite has its own theme woven into decor and linen and each day housekeeping will leave you arriving to a freshly made up bed and clean bathroom after breakfast. The swimming pool area nestled into a lush planted surrounding is perfect on hot summer days when you just want to relax with a crossword puzzle and a g&t in the afternoon without anywhere to go. The quiet low lit streets are incredible at night and after one of Derek’s incredible dinners, I’ll always take a walk to meet the friendly companion Zorro along the way while crickets chirp to break the deafening silent surroundings. Everytime I leave I know it will only be for a brief moment…thank you for doing what you do KAH!

We absolutely loved this charming old hotel that has been beautifully refurbished by owners, Rick and Sue. We stayed 3 nights and were glad to have had this time to visit Barrydale Hand Weavers for a tour and shopping, Joubert Tradauw for wine tasting and platter lunch, Metanoia Distillery for tour and tasting, and the Warm Baths. There is also great hiking in the region. We did a short, easy morning hike and swim in the rock pools. We had most of our meals at the hotel which has excellent food from Chef Derek and an excellent menu. I loved the Chef’s Vegetarian breakfast and the Lentil Bobotie. I am looking forward to my next visit to this beautiful hotel and town.

From the minute we set foot in the hotel, we knew it would be a good experience! Little did we know it went from good to great! We arrived a little early and were greeted with a warm reception. Our room (Melville and Moon) was amazing. It was clean, decorative, spacious with a rustic feel. We even had our own huge balcony. We spent the afternoon by the pool in a beautifully manicured garden. We enjoyed a lovely dinner where we were greeted by the very kind owners. We were lucky enough to experience a 7:00am meditation swim in the fresh waters of Tradouw Pass with warm cappuccinos hosted by the owners. Hands down, an unforgettable 24 hours in Barrydale. Amazing décor, quaint en-suite double bedroom, comfy and warm in Winter. Owners Rick & Sue fantastic hosts and constantly present. Lamb cutlets the best ever - Cuisine varied and every dish tasty . Cocktails in bar with world famous pianist(Richard Wilson) playing any and every request with aplomb. Dedicated staff with Candice phoning me minutes after our departure to say I'd left my gown and a bag behind. Attended an exceptional writing retreat at Karoo Art Hotel which was beautifully backed by hotel's attentive staff. Well worth the trip there.

We had a delightful dining experience at The Karoo Art Hotel in Barrydale. The ambience was beautifully set with a cozy and artistic vibe that added to the overall enjoyment of our evening. Reservations are essential to secure a spot, so be sure to book in advance. My husband and I savored the must-have Karoo lamb curry dish, accompanied by sambals and extra chili for those who enjoy a bit of heat. The lamb was succulent and flavorful, making it a memorable meal. The service was excellent, and the staff ensured we had a pleasant dining experience. We had a fun few days in Barrydale. The Karoo Art Hotel was in a great location for exploring and the staff were friendly and always available. The rooms were a little disappointing for the price we paid but comfortable and clean. The gardens were lovely and a nice swimming pool helped in the December heat.
