I booked to stay here as I was going to the theatre and this is really close to there and the train station. The lady who checked us in said they're renovating which may explain the mound of rubbish we had to walk past to get up the outside stairs to access the rooms (you don't go through the pub to get to the rooms). Our room was nice (well stocked tea tray) and the bed really comfy and the shower was nice and powerful. There is a lot of stairs and to find the room was a bit of a maze (even though our room was above the bar), the hall smelt fusty and needs to have windows open in the daytime although I appreciate in winter that would make the place cold. I didn't like the fact that the outer door doesn't close automatically so anyone could walk into the building from the car park next to the pub, and it was also very noisy at night - its a busy road and also the other guests were loud and kept slamming doors and shouting on their phones in the corridor but that's not the pubs fault. I think for the price breakfast should be included.
Our apartment we had booked in Chelmsford turned out to be a disaster and not clean, we could not stay there so we had to find last minute accommodation for our 4 nights in Chelmsford for a family wedding. We ended up booking this little gem of a hotel and were not disappointed. The staff, ALL the staff were so lovely and bent over backwards to assist. The room was clean and tidy and enough room to move around even with a single fold up bed put in for our 5 year old. This hotel is quite old and there is a lot of noise that travels through out the rooms because of the thin walls but it did not matter as we were so comfortable there. The rooms was changed and cleaned daily even the towels were changed with out us asking. The restaurant is actually some of the best food we had through the UK. Who ever is the chef really cares about the food that goes out. Even the kids menu was fab, actual real food grilled salmon and vege, was a wonderful change from chicken nuggets! If we are ever back in Chelmsford we would stay here again. Don't be put off from the older exterior as this has the feel of a good country, family run hotel, where the staff really care about their guests. They made a stressful situation stress free. Thank you!

We arrived to the Premiere Inn in Chelmsford last Friday night around 7pm. We checked in at the kiosk and were first allocated room 424. As we opened the door to 424 we were hit with an overwhelming smell of mildew and the room felt damp. My husband went to the bar to speak with someone about changing rooms so we were then moved to room 224, directly under the first room, but two floors down. We were late going to a party so quickly dropped our bags and left without looking through the room. We returned to the hotel around 12.30am and as we opened the door it felt like we were walking into an oven. The temperature in the room had been set to 28c. So, we turned the temperature down to 19c and tried to open windows. The windows are sealed and the fan in the AC unit did not work. There was zero ventilation and we had a terribly uncomfortable night's sleep. I also noticed when I went into the bathroom to wash up before bed that the toilet had not been cleaned. It look like somebody had vomited in it. I actually used hand sanitiser to clean the seat. It was rank. The next morning when I went to take a shower I noticed that the showerhead was covered in thick black mould as was all the grout between the tiles in the shower. I actually tried to clean it off with an extra toothbrush using toothpaste as abrasive, but gave up after a few minutes (photo of the showerhead after cleaning attached - note you can still see black mould on it). My husband and I were absolutely disgusted and not wanting to risk getting Legionnaires disease decided to wait to shower when we got to our hotel in London where we were staying for the rest of the weekend. With the expection of the sheets, everything in that room was dirty or damp. I have never felt so uncomfortable in a hotel in my life. The only positive think I can say is that the person who helped us change the first room was very nice.

The Muder Mystery Night with Miss Janet Mapletree and supporting cast was absolutely superb. We got together a table of eight family and friends who all enjoyed the evening tremendously. The marquee at Pontlands Park was beautifully decorated, even had candles alight in the chandelier to create the perfect atmosphere. The three course meal commencing with a Crayfish salad was brilliant, the chicken in a celeriac sauce was delicious and the trio of desserts perfect. All washed down with excellent wines. Thanks Pontlands for a superb evening. We will all be back.
