Nestled at No. 160 Guizhou Road in Huangpu District, Shanghai Shuxiang Xinbo Hotel is a building that has borne witness to nearly a century of vicissitudes. Its story dates back to 1930: designed by the architectural firm Harshend & Co. and constructed by Yang Ruiji Construction Factory, it first opened its doors as the China Hotel. It quickly emerged as an upscale social hub frequented by the elite of old Shanghai and, during pivotal historical periods, witnessed momentous events that left indelible marks in history. After over half a century of transformations and operating under various guises, the building was designated as a Shanghai Excellent Historical Building in the fourth batch of listings in 2005. In 2025, it was reborn as Shanghai Shuxiang Xinbo Hotel, joining the portfolio of Design Hotels™, a brand under Marriott International, marking its magnificent revamp.Embracing a strong European classical architectural style, the hotel seamlessly blends profound historical heritage with the modern concepts of humanistic art and smart technology. Guided by its core philosophy of "Five Scents and Four Beauties" — namely, the scents of books, tea, cuisine, aromatherapy and flowers, and the beauties of virtue, setting, accommodation and ambiance — the hotel has exquisitely crafted 86 guest rooms themed around the "Four Gentlemen of Chinese Literati": plum blossom, orchid, bamboo and chrysanthemum, with each floor dedicated to one theme. The rooms masterfully fuse the free-spirited elegance of Oriental aesthetics with the comfort of modern minimalism. Selected room types feature private balconies, allowing guests to savor a cup of tea in the afternoon, overlook the bustling cityscape and relish the century-old charm of Shanghai. In terms of dining, Suwei Restaurant, the all-day dining venue on the sixth floor, serves authentic Shanghai cuisine infused with Western culinary elements, perfectly embodying the
essence of Shanghai-style culture that integrates Chinese and Western traditions. Also on the sixth floor is the hotel lobby lounge, which operates on a "coffee by day, cocktails by night" concept. It seamlessly transitions from the laid-back vibe of premium coffee to the romance of handcrafted cocktails, complemented by retro and elegant jazz music, transporting guests back to the glamorous golden age of Shanghai in the 1930s. Additionally, the self-service laundry room equipped with LG washing machines and the fully-facilitated fitness center add thoughtful convenience to guests’ stays. The hotel enjoys unbeatable accessibility, with a mere 3–5 minute walk to Nanjing Road Pedestrian Street, truly immersing guests in the vibrant pulse of Shanghai. On one side lies the cutting-edge trend of fashion department stores and new retail formats; on the other, the authentic local charm of shikumen (stone-gate) alleyways. At Shanghai Shuxiang Xinbo Hotel, history meets modernity, East converges with West, and fashion blends with heritage in perfect harmony. The hotel creates a "livable epic of Shanghai-style culture" — a place where one can touch the past and embrace the future, interpreting for every guest the life philosophy of "Where the heart belongs, there is a haven to anchor".
