Everything was fantastic, hotel location, services and design of the hotel. I enjoyed the 2 nights there. Unfortunately the welcoming was not good for me as I waited for 3 hours and 20 minutes. Yes I came early before the check in time which is 2 Pm and I came at 11:50 and the front deck staff ( Eduard ) confirm to me that my room will be ready at 2 pm but till 3:10 pm only I got to my room after I esclate my issue to the front deck manager ( Peter ), the problem was not about the time I lost, but the attitude of front deck staff as he is looking to my face multiple times and he didn’t come to say sorry that your room not yet ready just to apologizing…
Very good hotel in an excellent location for an easy if hilly walk into town. The room was big and we were on a corner so had 3 balconies. The only thing that let it down was the furnishings could do with being cleaned ie sofa bed was grubby. However we found the beds very comfy and clean. The food was very good and staff could not have been more helpful. We would definitely go back in a few years.
This hotel was excellent. There are 1 and 2 star reviews here on TA - I do not recognise the picture in these reviews - all I can say is that the more spelling mistakes I see in a review, the less I value it. (I mean - you expect the hotel to be so perfect in every respect, the least you could do is exercise the same level of care and attention in your review. How can you expect high standards elsewhere when you don't hold yourself to the same level?) From the moment we walked in we felt welcome. The check-in was very simple and efficient. We arrived quite late, and they'd thought to have a tray of cold food sent up to our room for us. Thank you! There is an underground car-park free for guests (useful with a hire car) and whilst we were there it was not too busy at any point. The Wifi is easy to connect to and pretty fast. It did tend to drop out quite a bit when in the main bar area, but otherwise it was problem-free. The pools and areas are excellent - perhaps it would be nice to have one of the outdoor pools slightly heated - they could be cold. The little gym is fine - like most hotel gyms its not exactly a full health-club, but it allows you to keep up most of your workout routine. Restaurants - really good. The buffet for breakfast and evening meal was excellent - very well presented, maintained, and huge choice. That includes for vegetarians, with the slight caveat that it would have been nice to have vegetarian hot main meals for dinner, although with the very wide salad range, no-one is short of choice. The three special restaurants (Madeiran, Italian, and Moroccan) were also great, and although you have to book in advance, there's no limitation on how many times you can go. Vegetarians here generally have to ask, but then there are plenty of options. The staff in all the restaurants were particularly friendly and good at what they do. The room was nice, and comfortable. We had a double room with an extra bed (to make it a family room) - perhaps it was a little small for that given that it is a 5-star, but it was by no means cramped and if you were just a couple in that, then you'd be fine. The room housekeeping was good. A small criticism is that although there was a leaflet saying that soft drinks in the minibar would be replaced (for free) this wasn't done - I don't know if we needed to specifically ask. It wasn't a problem for us (or we would have asked) but it would be nice to have had that happen automatically. Point of criticism - we seemed to spend a little longer waiting for lifts than would be ideal - there seemed to be one lift out of operation although no signage to that effect, and the lifts were a little under-sized - quite cramped when more than three people were in. In many ways the experience of a hotel like this can be affected by the number of people, and while we were here, it didn't seem overly full - perfect for us but may not always be like that. The area is ok - it's a little out of Funchal (about 2 m
I would have rated this hotel more if it wasn't for the fact that there was no air conditioning. Our room had a fan that broke and part of it fell off (thankfully not when we were in bed) the fan in the bathroom wasn't working the full week we were there despite reporting it more than once to reception. The food was good. There was a good choice and the staff there were friendly for the most part. Unfortunately some weren't approachable, but most were very helpful. Two lifts seemed to be running, but never always at the same time as there seemed to be maintenance there a lot. I would strongly suggest that the hotel itself make everyone aware upon arrival that they charge per bottle of TAP water at the end of your stay. This was never made clear to us until we checked out. Coffee was only available in the morning with breakfast but there was a charge out with breakfast hours. Another suggestion to the hotel, if you are advertising a kitchenette area, at the very least have tea and coffee available for guests in every room. I would also like to point out that on the internet and on the bathroom mirror there are very outdated charges when it comes to towel hire for the pool area. It states on the sign in our hotel room that towel hire is €1 per person. This is now €25 deposit per person which I think is a bit steep regardless of getting your money back. Please change this so future guests do not get confused with misinformation that should be a priority to update for paying customers at your hotel. The cleaning staff were efficient and friendly. My only qualm was one day they weren't so vigilant when it comes to bathroom towels as they swapped ours out for towels with holes and rips in them other than that I have no complaints with them. The advertisement for the rooftop bar isn't so much a bar, just empty of staff and never open, same for the bar to the left of reception. It's a shame because there's so much potential to make it better. This is just an honest upfront review. I don't mean to complain, it's more a suggestion or a nudge in the right direction for future purposes so that there's no confusion for future guests.
Stayed here for a week with my Mum. Wanted somewhere central so we had everything on our doorstep. This hotel fitted the bill perfectly. All the shops restaurants and bars were all easily on hand. The staff were amazing- nothing too much trouble. Great recommendations for dinner, the best Puncha and all the must see attractions. Room was large with great high pressure shower and immaculately clean. Will definitely return. Have the use of the sister hotel Windsor with its rooftop pool and nice foyer bar which we frequented regularly and loved the staff there too,
Had a good two nights stay in the Pestana ****** Studios as part of a group walking trip. Rooms were ok, but a bit tired and on a cross road of two roads so there was quite a lot of road noise. There was a small outdoor pool and loungers, but you also got access to the large ****** hotel opposite which has an amazing pool and indoor area with pool, sauna, steam rooms, jacuzzi etc, so we didnt use the pool at the studios. The breakfast is also across the road at the ****** hotel which is really good, but can get very busy later on. Helpful friendly reception and can store luggage is needed.
We first stayed here in August 2023 and loved it so much we came back in August 2024. There are so many wonderful things about this hotel, I’ll try to remember them all! The food is absolutely fantastic. We stayed half board during both stays and the breakfast buffet is great with loads of options and you can also have eggs and crepes cooked the order. The evening meal is also wonderful, three courses served in the lovely courtyard or equally lovely restaurant. It’s a treat to be able to eat here every night and we came back a size bigger! The downstairs bar is lovely for a pre or post dinner drink and at the weekend there was live music playing. The pool area is great, a small rooftop infinity pool with fantastic views of Funchal and the sea, there’s also a hot tub. The bar restaurant by the pool is perfect for a nice lunch or drink. The spa area is another highlight, we enjoyed a morning relaxing in the hydrotherapy pool and sauna and during our first stay we had a wonderful massage. During our first stay we had a lovely double room but during our second we had a balcony over looking the courtyard which was lovely to sit on. The rest of the hotel is also stylishly decorated and full of great art. And last but certainly not least the staff are fantastic. The service is outstanding and they made our stay a pleasure and ensured that we will definitely come back!
