Cooker hob takes some getting used to either burns food or takes an hour to cook, lovely friendly hotel breakfast repetitive but ok, daily room cleaning service towels and bedding changed regularly, area absolutely beautiful plenty of places to go and see boardwalk lovely, beach we went everyday beautiful can't wait to come back
I would love to give this place a poor review to put people off going so I could keep it for myself but that would be doing the staff a real disservice. I can't fault this place at all- the place was spotless inside and out and the rooms were well equipped with fridge ,safe and air conditioning and lovely hot showers. The breakfast had something for everyone and changed each day. The staff are the real star of the show though and nothing is too much trouble. We mentioned we were looking for worry beads and the next thing we knew one of the waitresses at breakfast went across the street and brought back a selection for us to choose from and purchase from the shop opposite. Special mention to Ioanna who was so friendly and up for a laugh she really made our holiday. Great Central location but quiet with a lovely small pool and pool area. Can't wait to come back!
Have been staying in Pestana hotels for a long number of years and whilst aware that they are older hotels and potentially have their star ratings due to their location rather than their experience, I was still disappointed in my latest stay. The original sea view room we were allocated had a side glimpse of the sea (could see it if I hung around the concrete wall on the left of the balcony) but otherwise looked directly onto a fairly busy road and had no direct sunlight . I immediately went back to reception to request to be moved (was told on check in that the sea view rooms and floors 3 and above) and was then allocated a 2nd floor room facing the pool with the sea in the background (obscured by the mature trees in the garden of the hotel) but at least had the sun for most of the day. I had been told that the hotel was fully booked and I couldn’t have a room on floor 3 or above until 2nd Jan (checked in 30th Dec). I accepted the room swap acknowledging that I’d still like to move on the 2nd as I hadn’t yet been provided with the sea view I had booked. The second room we had been allocated (floor 2, pool view) was in dire need of attention from the hotel maintenance team, the bathroom door wouldn’t close, the paint was peeling around the door frames, 2 wall lights were missing and the floor lamp did not work. I informed reception abut the floor lamp but it wasn’t fixed. On 2nd Jan I was made to feel like a real inconvenience to reception when I asked what time my new room would be ready, I was told I had a sea view and didn’t need to be moved but I stood my ground and a fully functioning room on the 4th floor with a gorgeous view along the whole beach and across the sea was provided. I left a list with reception of maintenance items needing addressed with the second floor room (see pictures). We were on B&B basis and the breakfasts were fine, the layout in the restaurant isn’t particularly great and the food was ok. We booked to have a Buffet Dinner on our arrival night (€30pp plus drinks) and the food was inedible. We got a full refund as we couldn’t eat anything that was provided (gristly fried pork, fish that was so overcooked it was like rubber, chorizo that was white the whole way through) and after a lot of back and forth, managed to get a refund and walked into town to find something to eat. The positives - the staff were, on the whole, lovely. The location is incredible - straight out of the garden and onto the boardwalk / beach, straight out of reception and 10mins into the town centre. We had massages in the spa and those were fantastic. On the whole, for the cost, we wouldn’t choose to stay in this hotel again. For groups of golfers who just want somewhere to sleep, it is perfect! However, if you are looking for a relaxing holiday with 4star facilities and standards, this isn’t the hotel to choose.
Currently still here! Beautiful hotel, so spotlessly clean, modern rooms and great facilities. The Italian Restaurant is incredible - a huge shoutout to Carlos who made the evening even better with great service and recommendations. The food is stunning. A few things we feel would make it the 5* that it is - better food facilities (buffet) , more staff is an absolute must, to clear plates serve at the bar and keep things ticking over quickly and efficiently. More information needed at check in regarding restaurant bookings, the hotel and surrounding areas. The potential of this hotel is amazing just needs a little more effort. We are having a wonderful stay, the above is not a negative- just a few things that need adjusting to make this hotel a real 5*. Thank you again! Lauren & family
Intended to be a happy return visit after some years turned into a hugely disappointing experience for myself and my wife. Hotel is certainly not 5 star compared to others in Portugal; - bedroom acceptable but bathroom needs work on water egress from under bath after showers - toilet tissue seems to be rationed. Breakfast hot buffet not very enticing but selection of fruit and cereals fine. Two restaurant options available for evening meals - bar food or one other depending on the day of the week! Bar food menu very limited and the main restaurant very overpriced. Food quality acceptable. In general and with a couple of exceptions, we found that staff were a tad rude/abrupt on occasions (reception, night bar floor staff and golf shop in particular). Golf: Having obviously suffered from a very hot summer the course was in appalling condition with fairways and rough indistinguishable on some holes. The greens were also in very poor condition. The bad state of the course was sad to see as previous experience was so positive. We did however play one other nearby course where the greens were magnificent and fairways passable so I don’t accept Penina claim that nothing could prevent the poor state of their course given the summer weather. BTW, weather was bad!

This was our second stay at The Pelican. It has a lot going for it but a couple of minor issues. The location was great for us, a 15 minute walk to Alvor, under 10 minutes to the Pingo supermarket and 5 minutes from The Jolly (a pub we made our own and knew the owner from last year). The reception and bar staff in Pelican were excellent and very friendly. The food in the bar was good and reasonably priced. The room was the same as last year and an excellent size, a TV you can swivel round to watch in bed and an excellent little kitchen with everything we needed. Our issues were with the quality of the daily cleaning, it was poor. The floor wasn't mopped and our feet ended up filthy (which then gets transferred to the bed) or in my case had white socks that were black underneath. There was a general lack of care which was a real shame as the main areas of the hotel were constantly cleaned. Also our bin under the sink wasn't emptied at least 3 times and we took to leaving the rubbish bag out to ensure it was taken. This year there was entertainment from 5 until 7 one evening on the terrace, this was well received and maybe the management should do more of this in future. The hotel WiFi was patchy at best and our phones kept being disconnected. The pool area is pretty good but could do with a bit of TLC, too often we struggled to get a lounger while others were ”reserved” by people who never returned for 2 to 3 hours. A few more loungers wouldn't go amiss or a regular check to remove towels when the loungers aren't used for long periods. We will definitely return if the standard of cleaning improves as this is an excellent hotel with bags of potential and friendly staff.
CChristine WJust spent a week at this lovely hotel. We had a sea view room, which was well worth the money as the view was amazing. Room was very spacious. Breakfast was excellent with plenty of choices for everyone. Staff were very attentive and helpful, especially the lady in the lovely shop. They have some great things to purchase in there! This hotel has a prime location overlooking a glorious, clean beach and would definitely return as it is very reasonably priced and has great facilities,
