What an interesting and memorable place to stay. I was a little worried after reading some of the other reviews of this place, but I believe some improvements have been made over the years. This is an old, traditional ryokan and has some quirks. It's only staffed at certain times, but the man working was super kind and helpful. Our room was very spacious, but there was no shower available in the hotel and the cleanliness of the bathroom and bedroom was questionable. It felt a bit like staying in a grandparents' guest room. But the private onsens are fantastic! And breakfast was an experience in itself. The location is absolutely amazing - the town feels like a movie set... very traditional Japanese shops and restaurants surrounded by shrines. We walked to the snow monkey park, which was quite a hike (there are shuttles but we chose to take the scenic route over the snowy mountain... well worth it). It's a beautiful, unique and memorable place. This hotel was a fine place to lay our head for a night and the onsen was the most relaxing we experienced in Japan.
