芦原温泉駅から30分くらいの海岸沿いにある三国温泉にあるお宿。 近くには系列の越前蟹の坊という食事処があります。(こちらはオープン前から人集りでした) 毎年、ズワイガニ解禁されると、京都で間人ガニを食べに行くか、城崎温泉に行くかでしたが、今年は子供が小学生になったので、恐竜博物館も兼ねて、福井県に。 久しぶりに越前蟹を食しましたが、やはり、丹波系のズワイガニと明らかに甘味が違う。 そして、ボリュームも違う。 宿は一部床暖房で、温泉入浴後に冷める心配もないので、快適。 景色は日本海の荒々しさを目の当たりにして、良質なカニが育つ漁業場になっているのを実感。 温泉もお食事も今までの中で最高でした。

トリップアドバイザーでは5点が最高なのだが5+を差し上げたいぐらいのお宿。 値段も毎年毎年上がり続け私たちも逡巡するレベルに達してしまった。 前の建物が老朽化著しく改築をお考えになっていたところにちょうどコロナ禍が重なり、休業期間中がその間だったのは良かったが、再開してもまだコロナ禍で大変だと思う。 魅力ある部屋と建物を設計したのは東大の新進川添善行氏。以前の建物の入り口までの動線の雰囲気を残してあるのに気づき面白いと思う。さすがにロビーは食事処-部屋出しはなくなり給仕のオバさま方もいらっしゃらなくなった-に変わってしまった。部屋はそれぞれ趣きが異なるがデザイン性が高く悪く言えば部屋の中に段差があったりして気をつけなければならない。 川添建築に泊まって最高の蟹をいただく幸せ。朝食会場でMiles Davisが流れているのに気づいて来年も来るか真剣に迷っている。

This was just about the most perfect hotel experience we've had, anywhere, in any country, ever—and we've travelled widely throughout the world over the years. Our room (201) -- was really a 3-room suite, with comfortable low beds that overlooked the bay with panoramic views. The sound of the pounding surf below our terrace was magical. (For those who prefer more traditional sleeping arrangements,there was a separate tatami mat room). The living room area had a comfortable L-shaped sofa. The suite has its own Onsen, with quite warm true mineral waters. By our third night, we indulged for maybe 10-15 minutes. It really does relax and refresh. We had our our private dining room also with panoramic views of the bay, where breakfasts and dinners were served. These are traditional Japanese meals; Breakfasts were typically eight courses; dinners 10. The food was fresh, delicious, and inventive. The service was so thorough and caring, we almost felt guilty at the personal pampering. (But only almost.)

The building is kind of unassuming from the outside, kinda grey concrete and tucked away from the street. Once entering the views are amazing and the interior design is eye-catching. There are a bunch of different materials used on the floors, walls, ceilings. Check-in is in a private room where the private meals are taken. We chose room 101 cause the floor plan shape looked interesting. It's one of the smaller rooms but it's plenty big and great views from all rooms including the onsen, and great sunset from the tatami room. Futon setup has an extra fee. Seeing and hearing the waves crashing was beautiful. We came during echizen crab season. It was very good but for me almost a little too much crab in one meal! We had matsuba crab a few days earlier and we did have a preference for which tasted better. Service was pleasant and formal, very good presentation, maybe a little stiff. The staff never really asked any questions besides meal-related. Onsen was super nice and hot and opening the sliding door and hearing the waves was a perfect setting. If anyone loves tsukemono, it is not served at either meal. The location is kinda away from things so there's not much to take a stroll.

We stayed at Bouyourou this past Summer (see my review from July 2022); we made a return visit to see if the Echizen-gani (the Red Snow Crab caught in Fukui Prefecture) lived up to its billing as the ultimate version of the Zuwai-gani crab. I don't know if our palate is refined enough to authoritatively make such a claim, but if our own experience is any indication, the people of Fukui can make a valid argument that Echizen-gani is king of crustaceans. That alone makes it a destination ryokan in its own right. For what it's worth, Echizen-gani is the only Snow Crab that is supplied to the Imperial Family, and it's provided by the Tani family, who are also the owners of Bouyourou. The ryokan is located in Mikuni Onsen, which is a relatively new Onsen area that really doesn't have the type of charming hot springs townscape that Kinosaki Onsen has - most people will opt for the Kaga area, Kanazawa (although it's not known for its Onsen), Wakura Onsen or further afield in order to get their Onsen and crab fix, if crab is your #1 priority, Bouyourou does not disappoint. We've stayed at numerous top ryokans during crab season in the region (Beniya Mukayu, Kayotei, Hanamurasaki, Kagaya Bettei Matsunomidori, Matsusaki, Nishimuraya Honkan, to name a few), but purely in terms of the culinary experience, this place takes the top spot, with Nishimuraya Honkan and Matsusaki close behind. As mentioned in my previous review, this ryokan completely rebuilt from the ground-up in November 2021, and it's modern through and through. Some may be put off by the abundance of concrete in its structure, while others will appreciate the fact that it's not an old building that has poor insulation during the cold Winter months. Either way, you will be treated to warm and comfortable rooms, heated floors, power outlets and USB ports galore, a spectacular view of the rough and tumble Japan Sea and an in-room Onsen (hot springs) bath in all 7 of the ryokan's rooms (there is no communal bathing facility here.) During November and March, the Echizen-gani course becomes the staple of the kaiseki dinner (it's banned in the other months to allow the crabs to give them time to spawn and grow).... and it's served served as sashimi, grilled, fried (Tempura style) boiled whole and in nabe (hot pot) or steamboat style. To some, it might be overkill, and at times in the past we've gotten sick of crab towards the end of such meals. Not here. The crab was so delicious that we kept eating and eating until we were unable to consume any more. Unlike at Nishimuraya Honkan, there are very few non-crab offerings, and even the crab are served in a basic manner - not much ingenuity here. However, when the crab is this awesome, why try being too fancy? We felt Bouyourou did a fabulous job in bringing out the flavor of the remarkable Echizen-gani. It's purity at its finest, in our opinion. If you want the absolute best crab, forget King Crab or Snow Crab or Shanghai Crab or Hairy Crab, because n
