All is good, people very helpful and warm. Very good shuttle to airport, just not sure why they gave me a room at 2nd floor which is actually on a platform for ventilation or warming system equipment, kind of noisy but I am on jet lag and can’t sleep well anyway.
The only drawback was the breakfast. It was served à la carte with limited selections, and the coffee was limited to one small cup. In addition, the breakfast staff could have been a bit friendlier and faster.
ゲゲストWe booked this hotel on-line and I was beyond pleased with our room and the hotel. I called to get a room by end of hallway due to TKR surgery and service dog to go out. They made sure we had just what I needed. The room was exceptionally clean (and I was Head Housekeeper @ HIE so I like things clean and very maintained. The condition of hotel is great and very clean. Breakfast was delicious and we had a variety of things from waffles to hot food to cereal, fruit, etc. The pool was heated, which made for relaxing swims and the hot tub was nice and hot, like a hot tub should be. Trust me, we've stayed at so many that they're barely luke warm and it's not worth it. They take pride in the upkeep, cleanliness and care of the pool area as well as the hotel itself. We wanted to stay an extra night and the owner personally booked it and gave us a wonderful deal, and he even let me grab a bowl of cereal to take my meds with. The hotel is in a wonderful location with Hy-vee, Fareway, Dollar General, Walmart, Mc.D's, and other food places close by as well as gas stations. Lastly, I'd like to add that I was very happy with the safety of the hotel. Being in a safe place knowing that I don't have to worry about my vehicle or taking my dog out at night is one of my highest priorities. So, if you find yourself needing a place around the Des Moines area, go the little extra and stay in Grimes @ the Red Lion. You won't be disappointed!

We were worried when we arrived, the area was desolate with the neighboring hotels and restaurants abandoned. The signage for this hotel was in shambles and the grounds were overgrown with weeds. BUT, the facility was very clean and service was good. Unlike most one-night stays, we had enough towels & coffee for two nights! The bed was comfortable, there was a nice easy chair and good desk chair in the room. The negatives were NO HOOKS in the bathroom - but I always have two over-the-door style in my luggage. Also, the water had an awful sulfer smell. Almost had to plug my nose in the shower and we used bottled water to brush our teeth. The window opened and had a good screen, which we like, but the seal was broken and hanging.
ゲゲストAs Iowa State alumni, the building made us feel like we were on campus. For an affordable rate, we enjoyed our stay more than the average hotel at a similar price point.
This hotel offers a pool, hot tub and jacuzzi. Even though the facilities seemed a bit dated, we felt they were clean and enjoyed them greatly.
The room was not so exciting but it seemed clean. I appreciated the lighting, including dimmers for night lights in the bedroom and bathroom.
We tried the IowaStater in-house restaurant for breakfast. If you’re looking for a Midwest breakfast with all of the staples, they served us a memorable omelet with some of the best breakfast potatoes I’ve ever had.
All of the staff we met were kind and helpful.
I highly recommend this hotel if you want to be close to campus.
LLyle DobrowskiEvery thing was good but had a problem with paper coffee cups with the company name on it that leak and empty the coffee everywhere including myself . Then it happened again with the second one . So I complained to the desk and the manager said They had to use them because of their franchise contract and he knew about the problem. So that’s stupid. Hope the company reads this and corrects it The management should have taken action immediately. If I would have gotten burned this would be a different thing. Lawyers would be called and money would be paid. Fix the problem.
MMiss InformationThe snowstorms have started early in Iowa so I was extremely happy to walk into the warm hotel and check in. The desk clerk was friendly but not overly so. Check in was very quick and I was quickly on my way to a beautiful and blessedly warm room. Noise was a bit loud as wedding guests came in after 1am and I was near the elevators. Check out was seamless and breakfast at the hotel cafe was quick, friendly and tasty.
