This was the best hotel of my entire trip. It was spotless, andvery well laid out around small courtyards. If I were traveling with a large family , I would request rooms on the first floor that open out into the same courtyard . There were multiple common spaces that were comfortable and interesting. The laundry room was properly equipped and the staff showed me how to use the appliances. Breakfast was delicious, with a variety of hot dishes, noodles made to order, a coffee machine with excellent coffee, and fresh fruit.
The hotel was well located. It fronts onto a quiet tidy alley, one block from the chaotic (and fun) pedestrian food street and shopping street. It was an easy walk to the Shanxi Province group of museums.
I do have a few suggestions.
1. My taxi from the train station could not find the hotel. He left me nearby but I wandered around dragging my suitcase for a good half hour until the six people who joined in to help, were successful! It would help to improve the location identifiers in Amap, and any other map a guest or taxi driver might need.
2. When I asked the front desk for help arranging a taxi to the train station the afternoon before my departure, I was given to understand that I should just go out and hail a taxi the following morning. At 7:00am, there were no taxis anywhere nearby. I ended up walking a kilometer with my bags to take the subway. So…even though the service is great, don’t count on hotel help with transfers. Leave yourself plenty of time and have a “plan B” when you depart. The location is not easy for a taxi to find - cars cannot enter that alley!
The homestay was a surprise to my family & I. Loved the ancient vibe exterior but super modern interior design. The beds are comfy, spacious room and clean bathrooms.
Staff are super helpful.
Definitely will recommend to all my families and friends.
Just 2mins walk to the Ancient City Wall
Brand new hotel, very stylish and beautiful, it was renovated with high quality materials. The personnel is kind and helpful, they provided umbrellas for us for the rainy day.
However sound isolation in between the rooms is a big problem, when someone goes to toilet in the next room it sounds like they are inside your room because of the air channels in between the rooms. And also there is a constant back noise like the sound of a fridge but there is no fridge inside the room! The room is a bit “too modern” for our taste, there was a mirror with a blue light that we had to cover with a towel and we had to turn off the “intelligent toilet” that also had a blue light and a sensor. Anyways too many lights and too much noise in the room. Unfortunately we regretted to have moved to this hotel and pay 20€ more per night compared to our previous hotel in Pingyao.
MMethilanI spent nearly a week at Datong Milan/Magnolia Hotel (Dai Residence branch) and it was a very pleasant and enjoyable stay
Location:
- Nestled a quieter part of the ancient city, that provided a peaceful retreat after each day of exploring.
- 10 minutes to some of the attractions of the old town
- 15-20 minute walk to the popular restaurants and more attractions
- 30 minute walk to Huayan Temple and its nearby street markets.
I'm always happy to walk but if needed, I could always use DiDi to take me around.
Falling asleep without street noise is something I like. There is a bit of building work going nearby, which is happening all over Datong Ancient City, but nothing too major.
Nearby is the Ancient City's wall, but walk past that and you can see the locals dance in the morning in the park or walk along the canal/moat in the evening.
Room:
The room was surprisingly spacious, offering plenty of room to spread out and relax, a welcome change from cramped city accommodations. The staircase is a bit narrow, so those with lots of big luggage might struggle (no lift)
Importantly, it was very clean and well equipped. I especially liked the Chinese tea ceremony set!
Service:
- Despite a noticeable language barrier, everyone went above and beyond with smiles, helpful gestures, and clear efforts to communicate.
- Especially the manager, who told me about local food to try, things to do and asked if I needed anything. She noticed that I was bringing back leftovers from the restaurant, and bottled drinks from the shops, and said I could use the fridge.
- I can't speak Chinese so when the delivery driver came to drop off my order, the staff will take it from the reception and bring it to me.
- Unfortunately, breakfast isn't available here
- Drinking water topped up. Humidifier and mosquito repellent were provided when needed.
I will not hesitate to book here again on my next visit and I highly recommend this hotel for anyone seeking comfort and genuine warmth in Datong!

EewanwanI stayed at Ibis in Datong, and this time the room felt noticeably more spacious compared to other Ibis hotels.
As always, I choose Ibis (Huazhu Group) whenever I travel in China—it gives me a strong sense of reliability and peace of mind.
The non-smoking room is still my favorite—clean, fresh, and free of any unpleasant smells.
The bed is soft and comfortable, and the bedsheets feel great. I always sleep well here.
The breakfast was surprisingly good, definitely better than expected for a budget hotel.
The location is convenient, not too far from the main areas.
I also really liked Datong as a city—people are sincere and very willing to help.
The local tourist shuttle system is well organized, so there’s usually no need to hire a private car.
Overall, it was a very comfortable stay. I would definitely stay here again.
LLiuMKThis is a brand new hotel. Everything works well in the room, and the smart AI assistant is both amusing and practical in controlling room functions. The room furnishings are of good quality.
The hotel is an amazing location, as it is just a short walk to the ancient city as well as the You Qian Ping Yao show, which is highly recommended. The hotel staff will book the tickets for you at a slight discount and it is not part of the hotel package, whichl makes it appear to be free.
There are many eateries next to the hotel, and there is even a night food street just 100m away, but it was only open during the weekends during my stay in winter. There is also a big supermarket about 300m away, and many bakeries and bubble tea joints. There are plenty of food options..
Most importantly, the owner will fetch you to and fro from the train station. The hotel staff are also very warm and friendly, and will make you feel most welcome. The hotel owner also provided a humidifier, which really provided me much relief from the low humidity
Overall, this hotel is highly recommended.
