"After years of living in Bakoteh, we were looking for accommodation in Sanyang, Gambia, for a short holiday. We found several accommodations via Google Maps, and Kaira Kunda appealed to us the most. Kaira Kunda is a guesthouse with six apartments. It looks very neat and well-maintained. Our apartment, no. 2, looked neat and clean, even under the bed. There's also a "watchman," named Modu, who keeps everything clean and maintained, answers all questions, provides advice, and helps where needed. A taxi driver, Madi, is also available to take you anywhere you want at a reasonable price. Kaira Kunda is located in a quiet area where you can enjoy walking. Except for the two main roads, all are dirt roads. The people you encounter during your walks are all friendly and approachable, and everywhere you'll encounter chickens, goats, and the occasional pig, all foraging for food. In the immediate vicinity, you'll find several local shops where you can buy breakfast, fresh tapalapa, local bread, with or without butter, mayonnaise, or something else. Other basic necessities are also available. The selection varies by shop. If one doesn't have it, another will. There are also several restaurants in the area, but we didn't try any of them. Every evening, we were served authentic African food, prepared by a local woman. A 10-minute walk away is the Sanyang Highway, lined with small shops, businesses, a taxi stand, and a transfer point for the minibuses. Don't be fooled by the barbed wire on the guesthouse wall and the bars and fences in front of the apartments. We never felt unsafe outside. And try to look past the chaos and poverty; it is, after all, a third-world country. If you can manage that, you'll have a fantastic stay and will definitely want to return."
